Claire is so #relatable

Briar 💜

As someone who really wanted to get a library job in the pioneer valley, I hope Claire has better fictional luck. She might if she's looking for academic! What's the QC verse Hampshire again? They're always hiring.

Katy Kania

I WISH

Katy Kania

Poor Claire. Lets hope she and Martin can work through this during the next arc.

maybe the QC-verse actually has well-funded education & library programs. Would that really be any stranger than the sentient robots?

Peter McDevitt

“Library Master! Master of the Total Aggregate Knowledge of Civilization! Only slightly less/more viable a career than journalism!” ~sigh~

Holly Nelson

My smarter half was going for her MLS degree when she saw how few available jobs there were that actually paid a living wage. She quit and returned to Web content administration and content marketing.

Maurice Kessler

Yeah, library jobs... Suuuuuuuuuuper easy to come by. Especially in the Land of Liberal Arts schools

Natalie Wagner

Need to animate one eye twitching, just a little.....

Tai and Marten are administrative & support staff rather than librarians (Tai being the office manager). If Claire were able to get a job at Smif's main library, she'd be technically boss of both of them as a librarian of any level over admin staff. Like you say, interesting ramifications given Claire's motto of: "Libraries Are Serious Business"!

Ben Russell-Gough

No, I'm wrong. The school for the deaf in Northampton specializes in teaching them to speak, rather than in signing. They no doubt sign, but would be able to speak to some degree or other, and to read lips.

To work as a reference librarian in a college library, you need at least a masters degree in some subject, as well as the library degree. I'm not sure Claire has a subject masters. She could run circulation and shelving without a subject masters. To work at the school for the deaf, she would need to be able to sign, but they might let her learn on the job, because there are relatively few librarians who can sign. I would love to see those strips. Claire would bust her ass to get it right, but she would be in right over her head for a while.

I'm a librarian in NYC. From what I hear, it is just about impossible to get library work in little towns. There is going to be Smif's main library, maybe some specialized libraries at Smif (maybe one at the Botanic Garden), a public library, some elementary and high school libraries, and the school for the deaf library. Claire might well have to split for Boston or NYC. Alternately, she could displace Tai at Smif, becoming Marten's boss. Either would have interesting ramifications.

Nah, I don't see Dora returning to the foreground. More like Marten-Claire-Emily-Hannelore banter, with Dora occasionally stepping in to penalize one of them for unnecessary weirdness. :p

Daryl Sawyer

Calling it now: As a stop-gap, Claire will get a job at Coffee of Doom 'until something comes up'. Once again, Marten's visits to CoD will become the main background for filler strips. Marten-Claire-Dora banter will become a major feature of the comic.

Ben Russell-Gough

Either screaming internally or giraffe who it totally stoned, one or the other...

Patrick Jackson

It depends. Are libraries serious business?

Ben Russell-Gough

I once worked in a library. (what, you thought a story starting like that would be exciting?)

Andrew

Using Discworld's L-space, of course. The secret to passing that part of the exam is to bring a banana. Failure to do so is... not recommended.

Andrew

When this goes live, I am so linking one of my friends to it.

Chris Crowther

Seriously, I could see why she might not want that. She doesn't get on tremendously well with Tai and the fact that her boyfriend works there might lead to the trustees to start muttering about 'conflict of interest'.

Ben Russell-Gough

If asked about that, Penny's advice would be: "No! Run!"

Ben Russell-Gough

Ah the wonders of post-graduation life suddenly looming up before you! Never mind, Claire! No matter what, I'm sure that Tai can get you a job at Smif! Seriously, though, Claire is going to have to have the guts to start at the bottom - at the VERY bottom: 'Junior Assistant Shelf-Stacker and Refreshment Maker to the Junior Assistant Librarian' or something similarly dehumanising.

Ben Russell-Gough

As a Library Master who currently maintains three part-time jobs (one half-time, two as needed, all in Libraries), nearly a decade after getting my degree, I resemble Claire’s expression.

Simran Khalsa

Me right now

Stoodmuffin

On the positive side, as a master librarian she will have the power to summon books.

Bagge

At least has a practical degree, but if she can't continue working at the university library maybe Veronica could see if a certain dominatrix/librarian knows of any openings. The drawback would be relocating.

Brent Catherman

It's still a more practical degree than most, but if Claire can't continue working at the university library she could probably find a part time job a "book store" until something opens up.

Brent Catherman

yeahhhhhhh I'd rather have to re-enter the dating world than find a (new) job if only because NOT dating is an option

Minzoku Bokumetsu

As a librarian this hits close to home

I bet ¾ of the Masters in Library Science comprehensive examination involves figuring out where the books would qualify in the Dewey Decimal and the even more dreaded Library of Congress system. (The other ¼ involves keeping books in pristine condition, especially the rare books and how to get overdue books paid up.)

Miyaa

Who?

Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns

((screm))

MikeT

I foresee an "It rhymes" plot here, where Claire is offered a great job far from Marten. Marten will, of course, be chill about it and make Faye feel guilty about how she treated Angus.

Carl Fink

As an Aspie I can confirm this is indeed one of the many standard configurations my face takes.

Will Weaver

I ultimately decided against getting an MLIS, but I may have to reconsider just so I can tell everyone I'm a "Library Master."

Charlotte Grubbs

At the prospect of job-hunting in this economy?

Olivia Irene

It’s okay, Claire, you can always find a low-paying job that has nothing to do with your degree and suffer in it for 10 years. It’ll be fine, after all, I’m doing that right now! [breaks down crying]

Will Weaver

Is she screaming out of excitement or fear?

JD

*nervous giggle* *twitch twitch* "Yup..."

Dustin

A Standard Issue Aspie face.

pilgrim3

I've had that face for 10 years.

darklion

"I'm fine. This is fine"

Tim Eldred

She should just apply at the SMIF library since she's there all the time.

Nicholas Lopez

I think her face might be stuck that way.
