The problem with a petard wasn't so much the bomb itself. The problem was the fuse. A fuse set for "Oh, a minute or so" might go off in 60 seconds. Or it could go in 15 or 20 seconds. Or it could just go out. So... The victim is carrying his bomb and running like hell towards the gates. The marksmen on the walls, seeing him running up, start peppering the crackpot with crack potshots. But he survives, drops the bomb, turns to run, and the 60 second fuse was really 27 seconds and the bomb just ruins his day. Not to mention his armor.

Good rule of thumb is that if you can't be sure whether or not it's offensive, it probably is.

I just looked it up, and apparently petards are a kind of bomb?! I always assumed they were like suspenders, hence how you could be 'hoisted by your own petard'. I'm not really sure how an explosion can hoist you. I wonder where that phase came from! haha
