Well, we've made it. The Faybles ship has sailed onto the high seas. While "all the feels" to Jeph for creating such an engaging and fun universe, there's something else I really want to shout about: You, my fellow Patrons. What a rich community we have here. So many sharing their own spins on each of Jeph's strips, so often making me re-read the day's strip with fresh eyes. I'm also thankful for the "Archive Divers" who, time and again, provide and interpret the context newer readers may have missed, or long-time readers may have forgotten, not to mention hidden twists that have me re-reading entire sequences. Our occasional philosophical discussions are nothing less than outstanding, a graduate-level seminar anyone can join. You really get me thinking about things to bring back into my daily life, or at least to emphasize. It's why I've been a sci-fi addict for half a century, because the stories can isolate humans from their default context and see what they do in new ones, revealing useful things about ourselves and the "real" world we inhabit. This motivated group, and our discussions, really brings that home, every time. So, here's to Jeph for yet another great story arc. And here's to you, my fellow Patrons, for sharing the ride.

I was thinking that "May I ask where you went, earlier?" is a markedly courteous, careful way to talk when in bed naked with someone, but, of course, when you can break people by accident you are careful around them all the time.

Yeah. There's "Don't go anywhere", "I adore you", "What the *fuck* is happening right now?", rabbit-in-the-headlights, and a touch of "*whistle-whistle-whistle* Nothing to see here" for the sake of any observers. There's something so beautiful about that. For me, it's the third panel of the following strip: "Is that why you checked for my armor?" "I-I was scared you left. I knew you wouldn't go anywhere without it." So, *so* much packed into that panel. Armor. Tears. Caring for each other cutting through everything else. Gets me every time.

Amid all the talk about the potential danger of Bubbles getting her freak on with Faye, I want to point out a detail of the strip from a week ago, because it touched me, and because it's a great example of the wealth of narrative packed into Jeph's visual technique. Look at the bottom right corner of panel two. In the midst of her acute distress--in the midst of her terror at having hurt Faye, at losing Faye, at being *dishonored* in front of her friends, of being laughed at and dismissed--Bubbles's fingers are flexing into the armrest. Her FINGERS. Are FLEXING. Those same hands have accidentally ripped the bumper off a humvee. And even in the midst of her distress, she's not destroying that chair. *That's* how restrained Bubbles is. All the fucking time. Every moment of her life. Because she's so afraid of all that. And despite that, she reaches out and opens up and exposes herself. Without destroying the balsa wood and meat surrounding her. Yeah. She's the safest, most tender lover you could ever ask for. Faye knows she's safe in her arms. Here's how deeply this storyline has affected me. On Sunday my wife and I saw "Deadpool 2", at which point I heard this acoustic version of "Take On Me" for the first time. Ever since then, I've been thinking of, and listening to, the song, and thinking of Bubbles and Faye. I'm such a freakin' mess. Naked personal conversations with deep philosophical and sociocultural overtones are one of the best ways of spending time (to my personal taste anyway). The one picture that strikes me as the core of this arc is the panel where Faye walks Bubbles out of the Coffee of Doom, hanging on to Bubbles' forearm like it was her one hope of life. The expression on both faces is almost identical, they both look stunned and a little shell shocked.

In most comics/shows/whatever that feature sexual activity, it's all about the sex, not the love between them. Bubbles and Faye are putting in their best moves because they both want the biggest smile on their partner's face. There's love there, and they want each other to be happy. Getting their mack on is a pleasant bonus.

Question for Catholics. If Bubbles were a woman what Faye is doing is a mortal sin. But Bubbles is a robot. She can’t commit sins of the flesh, since she doesn’t have any. On the other hand we are definitely seeing lust happening. Oh my yes. So is Bubbles committing a sin? Can she sin? Did robots fall from grace? I’m an Anglican and we don’t have a well-defined sin-structure. I’m asking for clarification. (Actually I’m trying to stir up trouble. You probably figured that out.)
