Given previous conversations in the strip, I'd bet Bubbles can have an orgasm any time she wants, but she chooses to reserve them for *extremely* rare occasions. Remember early on, when she said... I think it was "Once a year I allow myself to wink"? I imagine she has activated algorithms that allow her to respond to Faye's touch. Yeah, I know. I'm shipping hard. She's such a beautiful, fully realized character, though. It's hard for me not to think I know her. She's a remarkably reserved person, and Faye is so special to her that I imagine her sharing that rarest intimacy with her.

Personally I wonder in what conflict or mishap Bubbles lost her team. I do understand that covering world politics, warfare, and other large topics can’t be fit into the QC universe as we see it, but personal tragedies definitely can. This might easily be a fundamental reason why Faye and Bubbles resonate with each other. Not exactly a newsflash, of course. But unlike the rampant shipping enthusiasts, these are the sort of things that I wonder about.

So what changed in the next year or so of QC time? We go from relatively common AnthroPCs to quite literally, fully humanoid robots running around everywhere. Is the QCniverse a simulation where rules are arbitrarily changed to suit the observers? Has the world been 'edited' as in Alice Grove, where years of AI advancement has been erased from humans collective knowledge? (Yes, I'm aware I'm probably over-thinking this and QC really is a simulation springing from Jeph's mind but hey, it's fun to play with sci-fi tropes.)

Do you think Bubbles breathes? She would have no need to, being powered by internal batteries but maybe she uses a breathing system to better emulate humans (and maybe for talking?) I was thinking that spooning a person who wasn’t breathing (even if they were warm) could be an unsettling experience.

So apparently that unitard comes off. I actually thought it was a part of her chassis since I thought legs, arms, and heads may need separation for repairs, but other than that line running across Bubbles next the rest of her body appears to be one solid piece.

Not sure that's necessarily true. Myomer muscles with interwoven signal-transmission "nerves" means compression damage is possible; in humans, "arm asleep" is merely how our brains interpret the "compressed nerve" signal. Bubbles may have a different signaling architecture, but her brain will still have to interpret "loss of signal" somehow, and there's little reason for embodied AIs to use a different term to describe that sensation. Now, "pins and needles" that accompanies return-of-signal in humans... I can see embodied AIs having a wildly different sensation associated with that (possibly nothing weird other than "I have signal again" possibly with damage report tags).

Bravo, Jeph. I spent the entire weekend re-reading QC from comic 3003 and the way Fay and Bubbles have evolved has been absolutely masterful. I'm talking Ian M Banks, Neal Asher and Alastair Reynolds level of masterful. The issues you've explored (singularity, self-determination, the meaning of sentience) and how they relate to ordinary people ranks QC right up there with the best sci-fi. Today I finally understood why this whole mini story arc (starting with backrub) feels so good, right and fulfilling - more than I ever expected. It is because it is not only great and beautiful by itself, it also reminds me of some of the best moments of my own relationships. And judging by the comments I am not alone in this. So, thanks and kudos to Jeph for creating such a masterpiece of storytelling. It would be hard to top it, but I'm looking forward to seeing what will come next.

I feel super bad that I've literally only just noticed in this comic that Bubble's speech is in square bubbles and Faye's are in round ones.

I keep wondering what'll happen when she and her girlfriend come to town. Bubbles won't want to talk to her girlfriend, much as the reverse will be true. Will Faye intercede, or will she feel it best to let Bubbles deal with it herself?
