I agree with you. In the earlier comics, the characters weren't as well defined, didn't feel real, and were more a "cartoon." (Popeye punches Bluto because SPINACH ADDICTION!) But now they feel more real, more human, and to be blunt, real humans shouldn't hit each other. Character growth sucks when it comes to physical comedy, eh? :)

The more real the characters get, the less funny and the more like abuse the punch jokes seem. Which I guess is probably why we haven't had any for ages and why this one didn't involve actual punching...

This has answered the main question in my mind - whether that backrub strip was Faye realizing she was attracted to Bubbles, or realizing Bubbles was attracted to her? So Faye knows she's attracted, even if she sort of wants to disavow it.

Change isn't always bad. Faye has never really come to terms with that even now (<a href="http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=576" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">as seen in this early example</a>). She would still be freaking out right now, but has in whatever way subdued it considerably. She really has grown up a lot. How she actions on these emotional changes is up to her. But she should consider that Bubbles is highly unlikely to cheat on her, move away, or otherwise just abandon her without notification (whether in such a dramatic fashion as her father or not). Bubbles craves stability and acceptance, and she has that in spades in Faye's social circle. People don't see Bubbles as the ex-military combat AI she was introduced as anymore. She is a person with her own personality, even if it is rather robotic (sorry) when she is nervous (but then, some people get like that too IRL). She has a pretty good life, a fledgeling but stable job as co-owner of a business, and friends. She is not likely to go anywhere anytime soon.
