I think Jeph just likes the idea of intelligent toasters. They're woven throughout the strip. I know they show up when Momo got her body, which is the first time we really see the AIs in human sized chassis and not just as AnthroPCs.

Jeph draws beautiful ladies really well (this is not a universal talent - I am still reading one strip and gave up on another years ago where you could barely tell female faces from male ones) but she looks especially sweet in the first half. Pintsize of course restores her to her more accustomed grumpy demeanour.
