Discussions of privilege aren't meant to induce self-hatred, but to increase awareness. Of the challenges others face that we're often unaware of. And hopefully to look at ourselves to see if there's any kinds of internal biases that need to change.

"Privilege" as meant by many people these days is relative and to criticise someone for not being as down-and-out as another is spiteful and demeaning. In the same way, May is privileged compared to a homeless, friendless drug addict (who may be in that state for no fault of their making). No one should be put down because of the life situation that they find themselves in. I'm so sick of the self-hating negativity that surrounds a lot of social politics these days.

I think it was more making sure Winslow understood his motivation. Diving into a course of action half cocked out of pure, possibly transient, guilt is a bad idea, even if the course is noble.

There are several other content creators I support via Patreon who are attacking major social, intellectual and emotional issues. But when my own batteries need recharging, I keep coming back here. This strip is so much fun and so fantastical, yet it makes me think and feel. I really don't understand Jeph's deft touch. That a web comic can sometimes serve as my touchstone. That characters crafted with a few strokes and fewer words can become relevant to my own state. I don't understand it, but I'm always glad it's here. I don't care to know much about the creators I back: I prefer to let their creations speak for themselves. Yet Jeph and I share a few items, and I occasionally send a "You're not alone" message that has nothing at all to do with the web comic, other than being sent in the hope that the web comic continues. I'm not artistically creative, but I'm inspired to change that. What a gift.
