Hey Patrons!
Hope you're having a lovely start to July!
In this ramble I bitch and moan! Hope that's okay!
Can't wait for you all to see what I'm working on next.

Thanks so much for the support, have a lovely day!
Love, Joel
Reminds me of people who get super vocally negative about mixing in music, half the time the thing they hate is what other people actually love

#1: Glad you vented a bit. It's not whining. We appreciate you.
#2: I don't often channel my mother in real life, but for some reason almost everything I want to say in response to this video sounds like stuff she would tell me or my siblings as kids. With that caveat: "When people are talking bad about you, it speaks more about them than it does about you."
Keep doing you, Joel, and thanks for letting us be along for the ride.

In a strange way it's kinda inspiring to see those few people that hate on such amazing and enjoyable movies made with such passion, a real reminder that it's impossible to please everyone and some people just want to be mad, all you can do is focus on what you love and the people who love what you do.
Excited for the next movie, glad you've given yourself something a bit easier this time!

I only have respect and love you Mr. Joel, your work and your philosophy around it opened my eyes years ago and I’ve only been better for it, I make whatever I want because you convinced me that I can, and so many other people feel the same way! Keep rockin Joel, and we’ll keep rockin with ya

These haters sound like the same psychopaths that make the "AI upscaled 60fps anime" videos. Heck 'em! 'Hello My Beautiful Creatures' was incredible and they are fools!

Thanks Joel for this update,
Imagine if every content creator tried to get into each other's mind to judge and assess their artistic intent.
I'm fully on board this project..
I don't expect all content to hit me directly but truly love the efforts and attempt to deliver in new mediums.
Keep delivering on this amazing 2024 timeline ~!

artists must avoid the haters. I typically block or mute people who are irrationally critical of my movies. that approach has worked well :) - about to show my new movie at a theater in NYC, and it's got some positive reviews, and people have fun at the movie. it's just art/film work - not for everyone - like anything that is based on taste.

Before I watched the video, I assumed this was going to be another rant about TMBD. I recently had a discussion with Letterboxd staff about distribution beyond YouTube in a "fuck the haters" manner.
Anyway, your commitment to filmmaking being accessible is exactly why I'm backing this project. I don't love everything you make, but I love that it got made, and I don't know how many studio films I can say that about.

I appriciate you make movies and videos for us :D
I don't really know where to stand on if you should give people a unsolicited critique and brutally honest movie ratings.
I always err on the side of "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it", but maybe thats a wrong mindset to have.
Of course you shouldn't let mean people get to you even though its hard to "unread" something, but I hope you know that those stupid comments are written by a VERY SMALL but sadly a very vocal group of people. Lastly you should know that quiet majority most certainly enjoy your videos more than the few trolls that didn't, even if we don't write it.
God speed movie man.

it's comforting to see even a guy like you get frustrated at this unfortunately common perspective people have of art, as if it has to measure to a particular prestige to have any kind of merit. a reminder that no one's above other's lazy criticisms and that all of us who make stuff are together in the uphill fight to share ourselves with the world and bring joy and creativity. appreciate you fighting the good fight and making the art that's important to you and i always think about creators like you and others when the going gets tough. i gotta go eat lunch now though i can tell my blood sugar's dipping because im getting increasingly poetic with each sentence

Thank you, Joel. This 12 movie project has been a huge and needed inspiration to me as an artist, so I know it's doing the same for many others as well.

You’re an incredibly bright and hardworking creator, so that even you are getting comments like that truly proves that nobody is immune. I’m a game dev with a couple of free projects, so it’s a bit of a relief to know those people are everywhere and not just going after me. I’ll definitely try to copy your strategy and even out the negative by engaging more with positive comments, though.
Thank you for your nonetheless very uplifting rant, Joel!

As only a crap-tier hobbyist writer, I can imagine how it must feel. You are pushing your own capabilities and resources harder than ever with severe restrictions throughout the whole process. And while most genuinely appreciate what you are doing, there's just some folks that just leave you thinking, "Dude, why are you here? There's plenty more Internet out there. Go there." It's like someone going to a flea market expecting to find the latest designer brands.
I mean, I wrote and posted a million word serialized web fiction over the course of just under 5 years. Every two weeks, a new installment that was about 7000 words long, with a month break between "seasons". Starting from not having that much writing experience, writing in a strange style with behind the scenes rules on how the format would go, the story on-the-fly growing from a joke prompt, and posting the freshest form of it on the web for free. Yeah, there's going to be mistakes, typos, and all kinds of other issues. It's kind of the nature of the thing.
And yeah, I've gotten all kinds of comments. Thankfully, most of them good and constructive. But, you always get those where you can just tell your creation just ain't for them. Or, their expectations don't match up with what your goals are. I think there's a lot of people who just don't get the idea of doing something... Just to do it.
Regardless, one rando on the Internet likes what you do, and your movies have hits for me. So, rock on, man.

I've not watched the movie yet because it's a long boy and because I'm particular about timing, but I absolutely love what I've seen so far. I love the art style and the passion. I'm with you Joel. Fuck it. Film It.

Considering the time frame you had to do it in I found it extremely impressive. Sure, I noticed the low frame rate, and the globs of glue left around, but as someone who "ships", I thought that was a smart choice and an acceptable compromise.
I see all these movies as experiments and learning about time and resource management. I love what you're doing. You're only going to get better and better.

I just started four months ago making shorts at 6-8 fps, very hesitant and fearing failure. It’s become an addiction and I crank them out at 24 fps now.

You're taking creative risks publicly. That tends to threaten folks. Good.
Your voice is unique and honing it with projects like this will keep it that way. So fuck the haters and keep going.

The movie was great! Don't let easily offended people bother you. I should know, I offend myself all the time but it doesn't bother me anymore.

I'm a huge dick for doing this, but honestly, most of your movies are justifiably janky due to thematic plot related reasons. It would be very stupid to criticize the moments where Caleb's mic cuts out as if they were production issues. If someone said Blake didn't play a convincing millionaire in Anyone Else But Me, or if someone said they wish there were some establishing shots in The Text to make it feel less claustrophobic, I'd know that they didn't understand what they were watching.
'Hello My Beautiful Creatures' is the first movie I recall of yours where a significant chunk of the notable jankiness is obviously due to production necessity. It's a fucking fantastic movie, but that one fact is going to mean people respond to jank less favorably.

My dad always said that you shouldn't do things that you want to do if other people have deemed it a waste of time, even if you really really enjoy it and find it creatively invigorating. You shouldn't be doing it. That advice has ruined my entire life!
Please never succumb to those idiots Joel. Make an 8 hour film of you just pulling faces in the mirror if that's what you want to do man, hell id watch it, hell maybe I'd even watch it twice!

You can tell some people are just not artists themselves and can't understand the value of spending time and having fun that kind of way.
And honestly, I do Animation for a living and Animation is super hard. Stop motion? Crazy hard! You have all my respect for making this.

You inspire me to create more, I've yet to make a short, but hope to make one... One day. Btw, how many frames per second did you use for the stop motion?
Keep up the great grand work, Joel <3
