"Health and safety. Gin and tonic division.", The Doctor, "The Church on Ruby Road"
This is fun and silly Christmas story. I don't really mind having goblin "pirates" in a floating ship with a big Goblin King that eats babies - that's just the sort of thing we can only appreciate in a Christmas episode.
"Name - the Doctor. Occupation - not a doctor. Current status - just passing by.", The Doctor, "The Church on Ruby Road"
The scene with the falling snowman and the policeman was added because the studio wanted more of the Doctor doing fun Doctor stuff. If you don't have this scene then the Doctor doesn't turn up again for many minutes and you might imagine you're just watching a soap-opera about a family that fosters children.
"In the old days, foundlings were left without a trace, but now we really can work magic with DNA.", Davina McCall, "The Church on Ruby Road"
Davina McCall hosts a real TV programme that does this sort of thing - but it was on a different channel so they are careful not to mention the name of the show.
"Listen, sweetheart, I'm not what you'd call decrepit. ... But all the same, how am I supposed to get round that great big thing of a morning?", Mrs Flood, "The Church on Ruby Road"
Mrs Flood is played by a famous British actress - and now she has been in Doctor Who and is famous outside Britain too!
"Have you tried that new pizza place down Minto Road?", Mickey Smith, "The Parting of the Ways"
Yes, "The Parting of the Ways" - remember, the finale of Series 1? Mickey Smith mentions Minto Road - and that is the road where we find Ruby living. Also, Mickey mentioned a "pizza place" and you can see a flyer for it on the fridge in Ruby's home.
"Yeah, all the mass and density and mavity exists in the glove, not in you.", The Doctor, "The Church on Ruby Road"
Ooh, another "mavity" mention!
I don't mind the gloves - as Doctor says that he spends a lot of time hanging off things - which is true - so it would be the sort of thing that the Doctor would invent. And it's exactly the sort of thing that would run out of charge at the worst possible time.
It's very close to the magnaclamps the Doctor found in the Torchwood building in "Army of Ghosts"/"Army of Ghosts"
And, it's exactly the sort of thing that I don't mind not being part of future episodes because I like the Doctor falling off things as well.
"Excuse me. Time travellers are great. Like the best. Like, wow. This lot just bimble.", The Doctor, "The Church on Ruby Road"
I like the callback to this line later as Ruby works out what happened.
"Mrs Flood, did you see that?", Abdul, "The Church on Ruby Road"
It's a shame you didn't react to the mid-credits scene. BTW: it's not the only mid-credit scene in these New New Who seasons - although I don't believe there is another one before Season 2 - someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm with you on the rating for this one. There are a surprising (and gratifying) number of quiet and contemplative scenes, which sit a little oddly with the whole goblin plot; and Disney's influence feels obvious, with the cringe musical number. Overall, though, it's solid and confident.
