Dr. Who Reaction 12X New Year Special - Revolution of the Daleks

Comments

"A long time ago... (2019) far, far away... (Cheltenham)", Screen Caption, "Revolution of the Daleks" I like the "Star Wars" reference here - and also the joke that "2019" and "Cheltenham" are not really that long ago or far away. "79 billion light years away", Screen Caption, "Revolution of the Daleks" But finally we do get really far, far away. 79 billion light years (a light year being a measure of distance) is about the estimated size of the observable universe. "This is a PR disaster.", Robertson, "Revolution of the Daleks" It's nice to revist a Jodie-Doctor antagonist - and he is just as much trouble as he was last time. I also like the black/silver color of Robertson's new "Defence Drone" casings. And especially when the Daleks take over and they get the red lights. "Tiny! How many times? You can't eat the cage. Believe me, I've tried.", The Doctor to the Pting, "Revolution of the Daleks" I like the prison with callbacks to well known Who monsters - I like callbacks. Sweet that the Doctor decided to start to reciting a "Harry Potter" book to herself - before getting interrupted by knocking. I remember doing the same thing myself - starting to recite a radio show from memory one evening before going to sleep. "Captain Jack Harkness, gold star for rescuing.", The Doctor, "Revolution of the Daleks" Really good to see Captain Jack back and actively in a story again. John Barrowman was credited in the opening titles and I was slightly concerned it would give his return away for you. "Why were you in prison in the first place?", "Evading the Judoon. Twice at once. Then once I was in, they took seven thousand other offences into consideration.", Captain Jack Harkness and the Doctor, "Revolution of the Daleks" Seven thousand - funny! "Hi! I was in space jail.", The Doctor, "Revolution of the Daleks" And we get a repeat of the Doctor returning much later than she intended to and causing a problem for the people left behind (see "Aliens of London"). "Oh-ho-ho! I've missed that sound.", Captain Jack Harkness, "Revolution of the Daleks" It really is a relief to hear the TARDIS coming when you're in trouble, isn't it? "That's phase two of the plan.", The Doctor, "Revolution of the Daleks" Now, that's the second time this series that the Doctor has solved an initial problem by giving herself an even bigger one - that then has to be fixed. "You fell for the old switcheroo. Awkward. That's not my TARDIS. I had a spare one lying around ...", The Doctor, "Revolution of the Daleks" But I did like the surprise twist of using the other TARDIS disguised as the Doctor's one. "Gwen Cooper sends her love, by the way. Says she took out a Dalek with a moped and her son's boxing gloves.", Captain Jack Harkness, "Revolution of the Daleks" Really cool to get a Gwen Cooper callback too. I suppose that was to be expected with the return of Captain Jack. "Well, come on, then. Jump on, then. You all right?", Graham, "Revolution of the Daleks" I'm not sure about the vision of Grace at the end. Graham and Ryan were really good companions and I'm sad to see them go.

This is solid stuff. Nothing brilliant; but, then again, for a Chibnall script 'nothing brilliant' is about as good as possible. :) There are some good character moments, and Robertson is a great 'love to hate him' character - but there could have been rather more Dalek action,I feel.
