Dr. Who Reaction 12x2 - Skyfall Part 2

Comments

"When I arrange for your death, I expect you to stay dead.", The Master, "Spyfall: Part Two" It's a good episode. Now, the whole, "the Doctor travels through time and changes things which allows us to resolve an issue but at the same time the Master is forced to take the long path and live across many decades to catch up to our story" - where have I heard that before? Oh, that's right, it's from "The Curse of Fatal Death" - (I can make that reference now!) "Don't have a TARDIS. Do have an Ada.", The Doctor, "Spyfall: Part Two" The moment the mysterious woman in the 19th century dress introduced herself as Ada, I knew exactly who she was because she is famous in the history of computers and mathematics. Also she's the only Ada that ever pops up in science-fiction stories. "Your Difference Engine!", "Oh. You ... you know of it?", The Doctor and Charles Babbage, "Spyfall: Part Two" And then I was half-expecting a Charles Babbage to pop up because Ada worked with him. Baggage designed his "Difference Engine" which was a mechanical calculator - parts of it were constructed - and so I also expected to see his Difference Engine in the episode - and there it was! BTW: He also designed, but never built, a much more complicated Analytic Engine, which was a programmable computing calculator - and this theoretical machine was the one that Ada Lovelace is famous for thinking about. A quote from the real Ada Lovelace: "The Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns, just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves.", Ada Lovelace BTW: There was another nice reference dropped in for Classic Who viewers referring to a previous adventure between the Doctor and the Master - spoilers! "That's not a code.", Noor Inayat Khan, "Spyfall: Part Two" As you guessed, the 4-short-dot "heartbeat" actually is a Morse letter - it's an "H" - but it obviously has the special meaning for the Master and all the New Who viewers - as you picked up. "But there's no one I'd rather be on the run with.", Graham, "Spyfall: Part Two" Our companion group hiding in the building site is similar, like you mentioned, to the group hiding in "The Sound of Drums" and for an identical reason. But I find this a nice similarity rather than moaning about copying a story element - we remember the Doctor being in the same situation! "Don't make me do the old soft-shoe shuffle.", Graham, "Spyfall: Part Two"

Part 2 is a disappointment for me. The first episode does all the heavy lifting, and does it well. Part 2 throws in a lot of additional plot elements, and the resolution just feels messy. To top it off,the Masters revelation that (thanks to him) Gallifrey has been destroyed again comes out of the blue, and does little except deflate the whole storyline of Day of the Doctor. Chibnall is clearly trying to plot ambitiously; but I don't feel particularly enthusiastic about how he's going about it.
