Reaction to Red Nose Day Special with Rowan Atkinson

Reaction to Red Nose Day Special with Rowan Atkinson

The British do famously love their "toilet humour" but it doesn't usually go as far as it does here. Everyone else has explained who the various regenerations of The Doctor were so I won't repeat. But I will say that someone once commented about Rowan Atkinson that he basically plays two characters. Either the clever, sarcastic one who mostly does verbal humour (as he does here and in Black Adder) or the "wibbly little man" (as in Mr Bean). I much prefer the first of these two.

This was broadcast in 1999 so a few years since the TV movie and a few before a new series was on the cards. I still have it on VHS! I agree with you about Mr Bean, I've watched a couple of episodes but that's it as I'm not keen on the character. Rowan though has been in many other things since the 80's including the series Blackadder which is probably what he is best known for apart from Bean. He like the other actors here was considered for the role of the Doctor at one time including Hugh Grant. Andrew has already covered Richard E Grant. Joanna Lumley as the 13th/female Doctor is a well known actress in the UK. In the late 70's she stated in series like the Avengers (nothing to do with the MCU Marvel) and cult sci fi Sapphire and Steel. But she is best known for the series Absolutely Fabulous (1992-2012) Julia Sawalha who played the companions was also considered for the role of a companion before the series ended in 1989 I believe. Moffet wanted to do a comedy of Doctor Who for Comic Relief but not as a parody or spoof so that's why a lot of the elements of this feels very much like 'proper' Doctor Who. Finally have a great Christmas.

Some famous faces here (apart from Hugh Grant who you mentioned) Richard E Grant (who Andrew references) Jim Broadbent (the shy doctor) and Joanna Lumley (the first woman dr) also Jonathon Pryce as the Master, a very well known British actor. I’m surprised you only know Rowan Atkinson for Mr Bean. He is a very funny man. His best work imo was in Black adder which you should really check out.

Thanks for the reaction. Coincidentally, I was just re-watching "Chicken Run" and was thinking back on the other film/TV roles Julia Sawalha (the companion here) was in. But her role in this special had slipped my mind. Nice to see Richard E Grant as one of the Doctors here. You've seen him in New Who - he played Dr Simeon in "The Snowmen" and "The Name of the Doctor". But, he has also actually played the Doctor himself in an official BBC animated story: "Scream of the Shalka", released for the 40th anniversary. BTW: Among the voice actors in that story was a young David Tennant - playing in, what he thought at the time (2003), was his only chance to be in a Doctor Who story.
