Hi, nice to have you back. I hope you had good holidays :)

Nicologik

I'm a little behind and catching up. You might like to watch this fan made video of Rivers storyline in chronological order. It was released shortly after this episode, and it does contain some clips from minisodes from the Matt Smith era, as well as some audio (and fan spliced images) from the Big Finish Audio's that you might not be familiar with. It would make a lovely reaction if at all possible, but if not, even just watching it in private, I'm sure you'll appreciate the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srC5HglwYwY&t=14s

Just back from my holiday. I really like this episode, and of course it closes the circle on River’s story which is very satisfying. The plot hardly matters because it’s all about the two of them. They seem to really enjoy themselves and Peter & Alex have great chemistry. Not much else to say, a fun one.

Thank you so much :) Yeah Amazon really freaked up this surprise :/ Yes, it was the first time that I´ve been spoiled about something that was about to happen in an episode. And I owe this all to you and your perfect guidance troughout this adventure trough time and space :)

Nicologik

I would really like to know wether it was a concious decision that the writers made, bracketing Clara´s time as a companion. But maybe it was just a coincidence. I haven´t noticed the real surgeon either. Thanks for pointing that out :) Yeah I know what you mean, by River beeing a bit overdramatic about the Doctor not loving her. I felt exactly the same. But while watching I made the decision to accept it as a method to elevate the emotional tensity, and for the sake of the episode to work I chose to ignore it :)

Nicologik

I´m sorry you don´t like River as a character. I love her. But I can see your point of view. For me she is just entertainment. The moment she´s on screen feelings develope. May they be happy or sad, but there is no scene with her in it, that is just ordinary. That´s why I love her that much. :)

Nicologik

I still can´t wrap my head around Rivers storyline. Seeing it from back to front and all jumbled up in the middle. Shows the real potential of this show. :) I have just rewatched the Silence in the library episode, cause I´m watching the whole show with my boyfriend again, and in German. :)

Nicologik

You´re absolutely right, I did missunderstand the regenration scene. Maybe my mind wanted it to happen, so it didn´t even think about the possibilty that they said something completely different :D Yes, it´s great having River back. She´s one of my most favorite characters :) I have never thought about my favorite Christmas episode, but I think this one might be it :) And I´m also very happy that the show didn´t end yet :)

Nicologik

Oh thanks for clarifying the regeneration stuff. I really got that one wrong. I agree with your take on the episode. And also loved the River and Doctor duo. It was a perfect relief from the previous episodes. :) Thank you for the additional info about the library episode. Those are very interesting details, and it shows what a remarkable show Dr. Who really is. Creating such powerfull storylines. Don´t worry, I´m getting enough sleep. It was twelve noon. :) I think my head wouldn´t have been able to record an english video at 12 midnight. My english skills tend to decrease in the evening :D

Nicologik

Yeah I had a feeling I'd heard this too but wasn't 100% sure.

I recall reading somewhere that Moffat intended leaving the show at the end of series 9, and consequently wrote this story as a way of tying up his River Song saga; but the showrunner that the producers had in mind was tied up with another tv series, so Moffat was persuaded to stay on. I might have read this on Wikipedia, though - so don't quote me!

Ian Smith

Incidentally, as annoying as it is that Amazon spoiled that River Song would be in the episode, you've still done remarkably well. I think this is the first time you've been spoiled for anything? Not bad for 9+ series, and better luck than most reaction channels. Fingers crossed for the rest of the series!

I hadn't thought before about River bracketing Clara's time as a companion. I have no idea if that was a conscious decision by Steven Moffat, if it was a subconscious thing, or if it was simply driven by Alex Kingston's availability. For some reason I never noticed before that the "real" surgeon briefly appears at the beginning, as Nardole takes the Doctor off to meet her husband. Anyway, a good episode, but I'm not entirely convinced about some of it. For example, River claiming that the Doctor never loved her might make sense if she'd not seen him in a long time (and maybe she hadn't), but it still felt like it came a bit out of nowhere to me.

Andrew Gwilliam

For fans of River, I'm sure this story is delightful. I've always found her to be a completely smug,self-satisfied, unlikeable character; so,for me,this episode is a necessary story for the completion of Rivers arc; but definitely a "watch once, but that's it" episode. I'd give it a point for the priceless scene with the Doctor faking astonishment at the inside of the Tardis; and another for the callbacks to all the previous Doctors. So, a majestic 2/10

Ian Smith

This has got to be one of my favourite episodes of Doctor Who. River is up there as one of my favourite characters in the show and I absolutely love that we got to see the moments just before she went to the Library wayyy back in Series 4. Gets me crying every single time. I have absolutely no idea how the writers managed to write her story 8 years in advance, since her story isn't in chronological order. I would HIGHLY recommend rewatching the Silence in the Library episodes on your own if you ever wanted to. Its just so cool to see the episode from Rivers perspective this time, rather than the Doctors y'know? I'm glad you liked this one, I wasn't actually sure if this was a well received episode or not in general but I'm glad it was!

You thought about Clara being able to regenerate? If it's the scene I think you're referring to I think you've misunderstood the line. The Doctor asks the General Regeneration? He's asking what regeneration the General is on. That's why he replies tenth. It so the Doctor knows he will regenerate and not die. It's a shame you were spoiled on the title (not your fault) It's great having River back (fun fact this is the first story since The Angels take Manhattan not to feature Clara!) It's a really fun episode if you can get pass the fact River doesn't click on to this being the actual Doctor. Even the Doctor can't believe it. but it does lead to that beautiful scene where the penny finally drops. And then of course there is the last part which is where I always start tearing up cause I know what's coming. And all the call back to the library story right down to the Doctor giving her a sonic screwdriver and scanning her with it. It's a 5/5 for me and I have it ranked as 23rd/140 and becoming my favourite Christmas story at the time beating last years Last Christmas. Although I'm happy the show has continued on I've always thought that this story would have been a perfect ending for the series with the Doctor finally settling down.

The first thing to say is that (in the previous episode) the Doctor doesn't ask the other Time Lord to make Clara regenerate. He asks him "what regeneration?" mean "which one are you on now? And the other Time Lord replies "Tenth, sir". So the Doctor knows that he isn't actually causing his actual final death. And is why he says "good luck". Still a truly terrible thing for him to do though. Thing number two is the fact that in this story River says "look! I've got a trowel!" Just like Rory's dad (her father-in-law she always has a trowel on her. Love your reaction to this. It's another in a series of great episodes and (until the very end) it provides a bit of light relief and comedy after the Raven/Heaven/Hell trilogy. The plot about Hydroflax and the diamond is just a bit of fluff but the scenes with the Doctor and River are priceless. First the ones where she doesn't recognise him and keeps thinking "the doctor" just means the surgeon she hired. Plus of course his demonstration of how to react to the Tardis interior is hilarious. "My God!" And then her speech about how she doesn't believe he really loves her back. That's when the mood really changes and his "hello sweetie" is just perfect. From then on it's a different kind of episode altogether. The Doctor got two things that he really needed. A good laugh for the first time in ages and then River back in his life. At least for 24 years. We heard about the Singing Towers of Darillium btw in the library episodes when we saw River for the first time and she died saving the tenth Doctor (David Tennant). She actually tells him that he must have know she was going to die soon because he showed up with a new haircut and a suit and took her to Darillium at last. And that he cried and gave her his screwdriver. I didn't notice at first but somebody pointed out that in this story he actually scans her with the screwdriver before giving it to her. So David will have all the data to upload her to the library! We see all of that here plus there is a reference to one of the minisodes where Matt is going to take her there but cancels yet again. I also loved the fact that the Doctor says that when you really need it there is a song. Meaning the song of the towers or a River Song of course. And the final "I hate you!" and "No you don't" are a lovely call back to the Matt era. I hope you are getting enough sleep. Was it twelve noon when you finished filming or midnight?
