Dr. Who Series 8- Dark Water NEW UPLOAD

Hi everyone,

here we go. Again, sorry for the inconvinience. I know it must be especially frustrating because this is the finale episode.

I hope you will have fun with this video now :)

Dr. Who Series 8- Dark Water NEW UPLOAD

Comments

They got complaints about the episode? Because it´s supposed to be a family show? I mean, yes it was darker than other episodes, but I would never complain about that. I didn´t one single Cyberman clue, so I guess I have to pay attention to it on my rewatch :)

Nicologik

Interesting!

I have to admit that it was only when seeing a comment on another reactor's recent video that I finally saw a genuine reason for people complaining. That commenter's in-laws (?) had had a very tough time, having just lost someone very close to them in difficult circumstances, and decided to sit down together to watch some DW as a bit of a "safe space" that would be a welcome escape from reality...

Re: that other possible Classic Who character. Apparently there was a decoy script version of the Missy reveal because they were filming the episode in public areas and the decoy version explicitly used that other character's name.

"Is is difficult? ... Reading all those words back to front?", The Doctor to Missy, "Dark Water" There is dark stuff in this episode - Danny dies in a traffic accident, we're told by the Nethersphere people that the dead remain conscious afterwards, and also we discover that Danny had unintentionally killed a boy when he was a soldier. The BBC got some complaints about this episode. As mentioned by others, Jenna is very good in this episode. The reveal of Missy as the Master certainly took me by surprise on first watch. I like the fake-out that she initially pretends to be a Mobile Intelligence Systems Interface - she's delightfully chaotic in this version. The "I feel like I'm missing something obvious" line coinciding with seeing the Cyberman eye shapes on the door with the Cyberman theme playing - is nice for people re-watching the episode - and I suppose for the handful that noticed it on first viewing. But I really love the echoing of the shots from the Classic story of Cybermen marching through London. An episode can always win me over by referencing some Classic Who. "I'm not going to kill you until you say something nice!", Missy, "Dark Water"

Andrew Vignaux

Thank you for mentioning it :)

Nicologik

Damn I missed all of those Cyberman clues. And here I thought that I payed really good attention to every detail. Well.... Maybe next time :D Oh yes the Toclafane, thanks :) I agree 100% about the Clara and Danny relationship. I couldn´t have said it any better. We weren´t shown any of those great feelings, I just knew that their relationship was at this point because people were telling me in the comments. But this is really a big problem for anyone watching the show by themselves. And it´s also a problem of me, cause I wasn´t able to connect to those two as much as I did with other companions in the past.

Nicologik

I agree with you about the bad guys, that we would run away from in real life, but do celebrate them in a tv show or movie. Humans are strange :D I´m glad I´m not the only one thinking Claras blackmail was really crazy. I still don´t know where that came from, since she was always a pretty reasonable character. Well....most of the time I guess. But that scene felt out of character all together. Jenna is doing a great job indeed. Really enjoy her performance in every episode. :) Yes I got that one sentence about Clara saying she would kill herself to get to the promissed land with Danny. I was put off a little bit about that sentence, and I find it really problematic. I´m glad I´m not the only one who noticed that.

Nicologik

Forgot to mention, and no one else has, what a lovely part Chris Addison plays as Seb. A sort of reunion between him and Peter from The thick of it. Though I don’t think they have a scene together.

Well, to be honest, I liked the old Masters face more. I really liked that actor back then, but I will keep an open mind about Missy. Maybe she´ll grow on me :) Haha I missed all those Cyberman clues :) Thanks for letting me know about them though :)

Nicologik

I´m curious already, if I will like her in the future. For now I´m not into her yet though.

Nicologik

Thanks for clarifying the Clara situation. i did understand that she was blackmailing him, but had forgotten that she was calling the doctor at the start. :) I missed all the Cyberman clues, at least I didn´t pick up on anything before the reveal :D Yes the Master reveal was great, loved that, even though I´m a little sad that he doesn´t have the old Master face. I really liked that actor. :)

Nicologik

I wasn´t disappointed about the Missy reveal, but I would have wished for the Master to have his old face back, cause I really liked the actor back then. I´m a little sad about that, but we´ll see about Missy.

Nicologik

I agree with everything you said, and I´m looking forward to watching the next episode. It´s hard to talk about just one part, if I haven´t seen the other yet. :)

This episode was the first DW episode to be directed by Rachel Talalay, an American who's worked on a number of Hollywood films and television series, including directing one of the original "Friday the 13th" films ("Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare"). Somehow I'd never noticed before that Clara was calling Danny to start the conversation about her lying, etc (I'd thought it was her finally getting the courage to tell him what he meant to her). I sometimes feel the volcano scene was a bit of a cheap trick, but it did give us that phenomenal line from the Doctor about betrayal. The twist about the Cybermen is planted very early on in the episode. When Danny "wakes up" in the Nethersphere, there's a 3W logo (the round things, i.e. an eye with a teardrop) on the wall. And the fish tanks look to me to be a visual reference to how we've seen Cybermen "stored" in various classic-era stories. The giveaway for many people was surely after the Doctor says he must be missing something obvious: the doors close behind the Doctor and Dr Chang, revealing two large 3W logos while the Cybermen theme plays. The things from the Master story you were thinking of were the Toclafane. Like many other older fans, I thought that Missy was going to reveal herself to be a specific character from the classic series whom you've not met. I suspect that Steven Moffat was well aware of that! My big problem with this episode isn't about the episode itself, but to do with the rest of Series 8: I just don't feel they've built up the relationship between Clara and Danny so that it would produce the impact on her that we saw here. Now of course grief strikes different people in different ways in different circumstances, and I could see that Clara's and Danny's relationship could've reached the point that I feel it needed to have, but nevertheless I don't feel that we've been shown it. Because of that, and some aspects of how this episode came across to me on screen, I'd say this was a good episode rather than a truly great one. What I do like was the brutal triviality of Danny's death, the disturbing implications about what death means, and that phenomenal twist/reveal at the end. Happy New Year!

Missy is a great villain and Michell Gomez's performance is astonishing. Though I always find it a bit difficult to say I like, let alone love, a character like that. It's funny how we need terrifying, sometimes amoral, villains in all our stories. And we feel that we do like or love them. But in real life of course we would run a mile. I do agree about the poor guy who has to "say something nice" before she kills him. Don't do it you fool! I wouldn't for a moment suggest that Clara's strategy for making the Doctor bring Danny back was the right thing to do. It was borderline insane. But that's really the point of the scene. She has lost it. Devastated at Danny's death (and just as she had decided to be honest about everything and tell him how much she loves him) she is in some weird state where she manages to convince herself that this mad course of action is justified. I sometimes wonder if the phrase "I am owed" is a reference to entering the Doctor's timeline to save all the different version. Obviously most of us would ay least ask the Doctor first to find out if the answer is yes or no. But like I said I don't think she is in her right mind at the time. I think that Jenna Coleman's performance is excellent. She genuinely looks like she has become psychotic until the moment when her plans go completely wrong and then realises the enormity of what she tried to do and crumples. I may be in a minority of one but I actually got rathe aggrieved when the Doctor sees how wretched she is feeling and starts saying he doesn't want any "bleating" or "whining". Maybe we can say that it worked to focus her mind on searching for Danny. Or maybe we can say that he still isn't comfortable with emotions and he wants her to bottle them up as well. It's no often commented on but in that scene when Clara is talking to Danny about whether it really is him in some kind of afterlife, she as good as says that if it is she will kill herself to get there too. I'm surprised that was okayed by the BBC and broadcast. Danny, of course, decides to say what she tells him not to. When he realises that saying any more than that may have a terrible effect he forces himself to end the conversation. And it is the emotions that the guy in the Nethersphere invites him to delete. He knows that Danny won't want to feel the way he does now.

We've never seen the Master look so stunning! Missy/Master is fabulous, I hope you get a chance to go back and see her during the edits with this now fore knowledge of who she actually is. The cyberman reveal has so many breadcrumbs, that on a rewatch you'll absolutely kick yourself for missing them, but everybody does. The big one is when the two doors close, they are cybermen eyes, and the cyberman theme music plays! The might as well have had a big arrow saying "Cybermen are here!" and we all would still have missed it haha.

Here we go! I'm so glad you liked this episode because this is the proper introduction of one of my all time favourite characters, Missy. Loved seeing your reaction to her revealing who she is ahaha.

Ok, some notes. At the start it's not the Doctor calling Clara, it's clara who is calling the Doctor. You seemed to have misunderstood Clara's actions with the keys. I say seemed because you seem to get it during the scene but then not after. So it'snot Clara is blaming the Doctor or trying to make him feel like her. She's doing it to blackmail him into changing time and saving Danny. It still doesn't make Clara look good but it's a little bit more understandable and as much as I (originally) disliked Clara by now the Doctor's line about "Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference" does bring a tear to my eye. Given that you mention how much the 3W symbol is use you missed a clue to it being the Cybermen, although most people miss it. At timestamp 41.13 on your video when the Doctor leaves Clara and says he's missing something the door slide shut and the 3W symbols look like cybermen eyes. I'll give my rating/ranking after the next episode but this is a good set up and the revel at the end with Missy being the Master, jawdropping. You reaction was priceless. One further note, the scene with the Cybermen marching down the steps of St Pauls is the same as a scene from a classic Cyberman story from the 60's where the Cybermen invade London. I can't wait to see the next reaction, please don't make it a long wait, it is Christmas time after all x

I would also go with an 8.5 :) On first viewing I found this a gripping and hugely dark episode - particularly in its bleak attitude toward death! The scenes between Clara and The Doctor near the beginning are masterful (no pun intended); Capaldi's superb performance, combined with Moffat's dialogue, make for an exceptionally moving scene. On first viewing my only disappointment was the reveal of Missy, as there had been a character in the Classic series who would have been a perfect fit for the role of evil woman; but Missy is a good enough 'second best'. Speaking of which, the images of Cybermen marching down the steps of St. Paul's is a direct reference and/or homage to an iconic Classic series moment. Overall, this is a strong first part for a season Finale, imo.

I really like this episode. Ok it’s really sad that Danny dies, but ! It really shows how far Clara will go. Her betrayal of the doctor was really quite shocking back in the day. Also it shows how much the doctor cares for her (as you mention) there’s a really interesting line, she says “I don’t deserve you” when he agrees to take her to find Danny, and he replies “I’m really sorry Clara but I’m afraid I’m exactly what you deserve” I think he is acknowledging his part in bringing Clara to this point. He has made her this bold and reckless. I love the scenes with missy and I was waiting to see your reaction to the reveal, let’s just say I wasn’t disappointed. Happy new year xx
