Dr. Who Reaction - Robot of Sherwood

The doctor/Robin banter was so much fun indeed :) Thanks for not spoiling anything :) Haha I love the pudding brains :D Is that something that people usually say to other people to insult them in a funny way, or is this a Dr. Who thing only? Thank you for pointing out the arrow/TARDIS incident. I didn´t notice that while watching :)

"When did you start believing in impossible heroes?", The Doctor, "Robot of Sherwood" This is a shallow, silly, adventure/comedy romp and I know it's not highly rated - but it makes me very happy. Probably mostly due to the Doctor/Robin banter. And it was also really funny when the guard selected Clara as the ringleader. However, I think the Doctor's theory Robin and his men were robots - (yes, ordinary robots - remember Cybermen are cybernetically augmented humans) - actually make more sense to me, than the idea that Robin and his men were historically real. As Jade mentioned, the story title is reminiscent of the 1980's classic cult TV series "Robin of Sherwood". That show has a soft spot for me as well. The soundtrack of that series was provided by the group Clannad - Andrew had linked to a video of a piece of their music ("The Theme from Harry's Game") in a discord post some time ago. And there was lots of music like that in the show. There was a lot of 80's hair as well. Both Tom Riley as Robin and Ben Miller as the Sheriff, do a good job in this episode. And I did like that they showed Robin had learned the tactic from the Doctor that let him win the fight at the end. It was very nice to see Patrick Troughton's image as one of the Robin Hoods. I didn't spot it first time (it's only on the screen for a few seconds) but now it's one of the things I specially look forward to viewing in the story. There is a reference to a 3rd Doctor story but I'm not saying which one - "Spoilers!". The Doctor insults people by calling them "puddings" / "pudding brain" again. I guess we're meant to warm to his grumpiness - and we do. It's fun for the viewer to recognise the "Who will rid me of this turbulent Doctor" line as a reference to the quote attributed to Henry II about Thomas Becket. It's lines like this that I feel call back to the idea of interesting Doctor Who viewers in history - they could recognise the line from their history classes. Robin's arrow goes into the TARDIS but it immediately repairs itself on screen when the arrow is removed. I think this is the first time we've seen that happen. The Doctor is there to supervise it so that might be what is different. "And do people ever punch you in the face?", "Not as yet", "Lucky I'm here then, isn't it?", The Doctor and Robin Hood, "Robot of Sherwood"

I agree :)

Thank you for reading other peoples comments and not repeating the exact same things, although it´s not obligatory to do so :) :) But it´s really kind that you pay attention to details like this. :) Also thank you for the recommendation, but I think I have to tell you that I will probably never going to watch this movie. I can´t even watch "Pirates of the Carribean" cause of the pirates, although I love Johnny Depp as an actor. :D

The episode was funny, yes. But to me it felt as if the episode was only entertaining when Capaldi and Robin Hood had their scenes. Everything apart from those scenes wasn´t really interesting to me. Capaldi was gold for this episode. His grumpyness is very entertaining in general, but in this episode it hit on another level :)

I knew about Robin Hood, well I knew that he was a guy that took away money from the rich and gave it to the poor. But I thought there was a way bigger story about him, because I know that there are whole movies made about him. But I guess there really isn´t? Yes, capaldi is great :)

Nicologik

The episode was funny that´s true. :) Thank you for clarifying my issue with the phone call. :)

Nicologik

Oh ok so there isn´t really much more to say about him? I have never seen any movies about him. I thought that maybe there was a bigger story behind it, cause they made movies about him. :)

Nicologik

Thank you for the explanation :) I mixed that up somehow.

Nicologik

Yeah, this one is quite forgettable to me as well. Kind of “meh”. Peter is always a joy though in my opinion!

Darn, I made notes this time of things I wanted to say and Stephen has covered them all lol. So I'll just go with my thoughts on this episode. It's another one I didn't really like first time, I think because it's a rather silly episode and as some one who grew up loving the story of Robin Hood (One of my favourite series was Robin of Sherwood which this episode is a pun of) I wanted something a bit more serious. I like it a little better now cause as you said the bickering betwixt (between) the Doctor and Robin is fun and I love the conversation between them the end about heroes and stories is brilliant. I give it a 3/5. Ranked 74th/140. I would have recommended watching the film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves but if that type of film isn't your thing then maybe not.

I wondered what you would make of this episode. As you saw from the imdb rating it isn't one of the most popular ones. I think it's a lot of fun but definitely patchy with a few plot holes that could have been cleared up with a bit more thought and attention to the details. Or just more time to fix them. Like the golden arrow adding to the quantity of gold on the space ship even though it was still just an arrow and there is no way it could become part of the golden circuit they were constructing. Or the ambiguity about whether the wicked Sherriff is actually a robot created by the alien characters or not. He was meant to be revealed as being one but the programme makers had to cut the scene because it involved his beheading and there was a current news item about a beheading of two prisoners by the Islamic State people. Obviously that wasn't their fault and they were right to cut the scene but it left a loose end. But like you I loved the Doctor's reaction to Robin Hood and his "merry men". And the arguments and constantly trying to score points over each other. Clara looked beautiful in her red outfit and the bit at the end about heroes and whether they are just stories was great - and a bit meta. By the way, one of the pictures of Robin Hood that the Doctor and the real Robin look at on the computer screen of the spaceship is of Patrick Troughton playing the role in a 1950s TV series. Patrick Troughton also played the Second Doctor between 1966 and 1969.

I see your point about the episode being boring. It might have helped if you knew about Robin Hood, but that is very much an English folk tale, which you maybe did not know about. I think the episode is quite amusing and of course Peter is brilliant in it. I personally love this episode but I read a lot about Robin Hood as a child and it is really up my alley. I can see why some people don’t care for it. It is a little corny in places. I won’t say anything about your opening statements as I think the other commenters have explained it very well. I love that you still like Peter Capaldi and I think you are in for a treat with him. X

I love this episode so much even though its just a one off type of episode, though I am biased because I love every Peter episode, its just such a funny one. Good one but I don't think its anything special y'know? I'm quite surprised that quite a lot of people rate this lower, I thought people liked it more but oh well. With your question at the beginning, remember the scene where Eleven was young again just before changing into Peter? He made the phone call right before that very moment. :)

KrispyKrushems

"He took from the rich and gave to the poor". Yup, you got it. That's his story, and the whole point of it. He's a folk-tale hero, turned into a legend over time. In terms of this episode, I agree with absolutely everything you said. "Rather boring, with not much essence in it" - spot on. Capaldi is good, though - and he will become superb :)

Ian Smith

The Eleventh Doctor phoned Clara from Trenzelor after the Time Lords had given him the new regeneration cycle and he had defeated the Daleks. The Tardis phone was still hanging off its cradle when Clara arrived to follow him into the Tardis and watched him change. So by that tine he knew that he was going to have a whole new set of faces and personalities and he worried that the first change might be too much for Clara to cope with.
