Dr. Who Series 8 - Episode 1 - Deep Breath

Comments

wish there was sound even if no video :(

I may just be a bit over sensitive on the spoiler thing but I'd rather error on the side of caution. Thanks for the comment about the blog although Dr Who is only a small bit of it as it's more pieces of me musing about things, mainly how it relates to my life. Hence why I called it Reflections in the Forest. But yeah apart from the one where I talk about why the Doctor is a role model for me they would contain elements of upcoming stories. Hmmm maybe I should start a new blog site where it just about Doctor Who.

Jade Ellis

It´s ok, I forgive you :D :D

Nicologik

David squeaks in at third but tbh there’s not much between them lol

Jenny Smyth

Yeah that examination scene felt a little strange, I agree. Nice to know why it was there though. But I guess you could have released the movie even if it was a minute shorter. But what do I know, I´m not in that business :D To me the episode didn´t feel repetetive at all. I see your points, but to be honest for me there was still enough differentiation to older storys, I didn´t really have that feeling while watching. And to be honest, those Dalek episodes feel way worse when it comes to repeating stuff. At least in my opinion. :) Oh you´re right about the "Peter" doctor. You say "We may", does this mean "I have to"? :D Or does it mean, it would be nice, but it´s not something that you have to do? Serious question, cause I do not want to make someone angry using the "wrong" name all the time. And since it´s still early I can see myself adapt to another name, if neccessary :D I liked that we saw Matt. I know what you mean, but I think the BBC felt the need to do this, due to the fact that this doctor was sooo different to the previous New Who ones. The viewers "needed" their beloved doctor to remind them, that it is still him, and that it´s ok to like the new face as well. I think the BBC was just to afraid that viewers might leave the show if they didn´t do that. At least that´s how it felt for me. Oh I´m glad that I was right about that garden :D Yes the quiz works. :) I have the feeling that I do pay more attention to the surroundings eversince we started that quiz. :) At least in the scenes in which I´m not distracted by something happening :D

Nicologik

Interesting. It seems strange to me, that it would be a spoiler to tell me something that I have seen already. But thank you so much for not telling me right away. I guess Andrew is the right choice to give that responsibility to :) I understand you reasoning about the first episode with this new doctor, coming from the 50th anniversary. I´m glad, that I had that little break of a whole week, with the Classic movie in between. I really needed that. So I totally get you :) You have a blog page about Dr. Who? That´s sooo coool. I guess I can´t read it yet cause of spoilers?

Nicologik

Thanks for the new term "caustic", never heard of that one before, but your right it pinpoints exactly what I wanted to say about his humor. :) The scene with the doctor not recognizing his face felt as if I was supposed to remember something. And judging by your comment I should have. Would it be a spoiler if you told me? I mean, should I know going forward? I don´t want to miss anything important that I should have known. :) Edit: Nevermind got my answer from Jades comment. :) I mean, not the true answer, but she explained it. So I do know now, what it is about :)

Nicologik

Why would people hold that against Clara? Some people have crazy opinions :D Oh he´s a fan of the show as well? That´s great. I love that. Makes me even more excited to see him in future episodes :D Yeah that reaction to the hug was really strange. Love that they did that though :) And I´d never be mad about seeing Matt again :D Sooooo many questions... LOVE IT :D

Nicologik

Thank you for not spoiling anything. :) I´m sorry you´ve been unwell :/ I hope you´re feeling better now? Waaaaaaiiiit a second, if Matt is 2nd place, where is David in your rating????? I can´t accept anything else than no 1, just so you know :D :D Just kidding :D I´m exited for future episodes as well :)

Nicologik

I really like him so far. :)

Nicologik

Thank you for the appreciation of my review. I like getting feedback like that, so that I do know it´s enjoyable, and I´m not just rambling on about stuff noone wants to know :D :D I´m exited for those future videos as well. I think I will really enjoy Peter as the doctor. :) Aww I missed his birthday, cause I read the message only today. Well I guess it´s not that important to him haha :D

Nicologik

I was going to say 4.5 but decided to avoid the messy details. Actually, 5 is probably better based on the point I was trying to make. Thanks!

Andrew Vignaux

Five out of six, surely? Or are you excluding the regeneration not directly witnessed by the companion due to being unconscious?

Andrew Gwilliam

"He doesn't do puzzles. He isn't complicated. He really doesn't have the attention span.", Clara, "Deep Breath" As mentioned, this was another episode that had a cinema release in movie theatres after the success of "The Day of the Doctor". And, of course, the episode is longer because of this. Actually, that's the only reason I can justify Strax's rather silly medical examination of Clara - that just seems like a couple-of-minutes filler to make the film longer. There was a callback to a Classic Who line in that scene though which was nice. Unfortunately, story-wise this does seem like a bit of a repeat of some that we've seen before - and for me the plot points are not nice callbacks - just repeats. What is the difference between being forced to hold your breath in "Deep Breath" and being forced to keep your eyes open in a story that might as well be titled "Don't Blink". And we've seen clockwork androids before in "The Girl in the Fireplace". Both of Moffat's earlier stories were better than this one. I was happy to see the Paternosta Gang back again - with more Sherlock Holmes references. And Neve McIntosh (who plays Madame Vastra) gets to use her Scotish accent to calm down the new Scottish Doctor. She even used the line "Here we go again" which is a callback to another character in Classic Who witnessing a new regeneration - a line for the fans. It was nice to have Elizabeth Sladen's husband playing the tramp that the Doctor encounterd when the Doctor is wandering around in his nightshirt. BTW: Brian Miller had played a character in another Classic Who story before - another person who has done both Who versions. But, to be honest, that scene seems a bit of another filler. As does Vastra's interview with Clara. I think there are too many fillers in this story. I like the egomaniac joke and payoff when Clara realizes that the Doctor is actually talking about her. And I also liked the big, long scarf joke/reference. BTW: we can't unambiguously call this the "Peter" Doctor - we've already seen a "Peter" Doctor in Peter Davison the 5th Doctor. We may actually have to start just using their numbers or this Doctor could be named the Capaldi-Doctor or something. It is nice to have companion continuity when a Doctor regenerates. It was fairly common in Classic Who (well, four out of six), and, as Jade mentioned, we had Rose trying to understand what was happening when Christopher changed to David. The Matt-Doctor's phone call at the end - it is nice in the context of the story to help Clara - but, I think it is a bit cruel to any viewer that had really bonded hard with Matt's version to bring him back for one scene so soon. The location of the garden at the end was filmed in the same general location as "The Girl Who Waited" as you spotted - (it was also used for bits of "The Girl in the Fireplace" and Torchwood's "Something Borrowed" and a Sarah Jane Adventures story). Your location-quiz experience is working. "I hate being wrong in public. Everyone forget that happened.", The Doctor, "Deep Breath"

Andrew Vignaux

So to answer your question about a companion seeing the regeneration as we kind of see it. We had it a little with Rose with David's first story, The Christmas Invasion. As for classic they also did it with the first regeneration but not really so much after that. The bit about recognising his face. This is a nod to the fact that Peter has been in Doctor Who before. I'm not going to say which episode, I'll leave that up to you Andrew to tell you or not. A fun fact was this episode was also shown in cinemas at the time of broadcast. I went myself but it just didn't have the same feel as with the 50th anniversary one. I must admit to being one of those people that didn't really get this Doctor to begin with although that opinion is not solely based on this one episode. But absolutely you should make up your own mind about him. Everyone has difference tastes and like different Doctors for different reasons, I'll get more into mine as this series goes on. As for this episode. I like it more in hindsight, it was just a big difference coming after an epic 50th Anniversary and then a regeneration episode so I didn't like the comedy at first. That said I do love the bit with Strax knocking Clara out with the newspaper and Jenny posing for no reason. And the phone call with Matt's Doctor was a really nice touch. It's good to have Vastra and co back to give it some continuity. For me though overall its 3/5, an average if enjoyable story. I place it 71st / 140. I have been wanting to do an analyst of this series of Who again though for my blog page so it's going to be good to go through it again on these reactions.

Jade Ellis

Very pleased with your response to #12 :) His humour, as you accurately pointed out, is dry (perhaps an even better word would be caustic - dry, sarcastic and a bit scathing). He's the sort of Doctor that you don't necessarily feel the need to adore; but you can rest assured that he will ALWAYS have your back! As for the episode - it's solid. I appreciate the movie-length, as it gives us more time to become acquainted with the new set-up (although there was perhaps too much emphasis on Clara in the first half, rather than the Doctor). The story is serviceable; and the Direction is surprisingly skilled. The alley scene is interesting - firstly because of the Doctor recognising his face.(This is a neat little reference to something which happened much earlier in a previous series - but, as you have a problem with facial recognition, I won't go into any detail!) Secondly, because the actor playing the tramp was the husband of the recently deceased Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah-Jane Smith); and it feels such a lovely gesture on the part of the production team.

I do agree with you about the way Clara stands for the viewers (us) with her difficulty in adjusting to the new Doctor. I have heard some people say that they hold this against her which seems crazy to me. Peter Capaldi is a great actor and a long time fan of Doctor Who. He's about my age which means that he saw the show from 1963 when he (we) were very young. The scene with Matt is so unexpected and so moving and Clara examining the new Doctor afterwards and hugging him is just beautiful. So is his awkward reaction to the hug! And is was definitely the right decision to include the Paternoster gang in Peter's first episode. It gives us a greater feeling of continuity and Strax is hilarious as usual. Is the robot/human in heaven? Who is the mysterious woman who tells him he is? Will the new Doctor ever enjoy a hug? Only one way to find out...

I’d forgotten how long this episode was. You are right about it being reflective of the doctors change of face, I never thought about it that way. I so glad you like Peters acting he is very talented. You are on the right track in some of the things you said about the plot, but I won’t say more for fear of spoiling. (Add on) I have been unwell this week so I have been rewatching 12th dr episodes in preparation for your reactions. I have to admit that I like this dr more than I originally thought, and I already rated it pretty highly. As was mentioned elsewhere the bbc made an awful introductory show announcing Peter as the new Dr. This was done because the press were about to break the story. Poor Peter looked highly embarrassed by the whole thing. But he was very gracious. He is by all accounts a very nice man. His acting talent is what makes him my new favourite dr, moving poor Matt into second place. I am sooo excited for you to see him in action.

Jenny Smyth

I LOVEEEE PETER CAPALDI! I KNOW YOU WILL TOO!

Elvira Heredia

Aw I'm so glad you liked this episode and Peters Doctor from what you've seen! I really enjoyed seeing you break down his acting etc, I can really tell that you appreciate things like that and I love it. Peter is an amazing actor and he definitely proves this in this show for sure. I think this is a really good episode, I LOVE how they introduced the new Doctor like you said. Super excited to see your future videos with this Doctor and so on! Edit: Forgot to say, right now as I'm typing this, is actually Matt Smiths birthday! :)
