Patreon Fee Changes

You might have already seen the email or watched the drama unfold elsewhere, but Patreon's service fee structure is changing. The end result is that I'm going to earn a little bit more, and you guys are going to be charged an additional small fee of 2.9% of your pledge + 35 cents. The details are in the link, if you'd like to know more of the specifics.

The new amounts you will be charged for each tier are:
Apprentice: $2 -> $2.41
Squire: $5 -> $5.50
Journeyman: $10 -> $10.64
Banneret: $20 -> $20.93

It's less than an additional dollar, so I'd appreciate it if everyone continued their support. But that being said, I don't know your situation, it could be this increase is a significant problem for you. If so, I understand, no hard feelings and I sincerely hope that I'll earn your pledge again in the future.

As always, feel free to comment if you have any question or even just want to vent a little!

Yes! I agree, I'd find this more palatable if the fee was all on me. Creators are seeing a 10%(ish) increase. Patrons on the low end are seeing a a 30~40% increase in their cost to support a creator. Patrons on the high end are seeing a negligible 6% or less increase in their cost to support a creator. Now, the real question: Are Creators being supported by a significant quantity of big payouts, or are they being supported by a significant number of 2 and 5 dollar pay outs?

hopefully this is a typo, because all it does in the end is get the credit card companies more money (they get a higher percentage of the pledge). here is a tool i made via google docs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15JBxauPmAQQZCNh0Q6U4mMLcitsu0r6nHkizM-7MsGg/edit?usp=sharing

The small amount of good that's coming out for us as creators is that we'll be seeing a ~10% increase in the money coming to us, but we're still having to fork over a 5% slice of the pie. If it was all one way or the other, this would be much more palatable to me (NoMoshing) personally, but this is the way it is for now, unfortunately.

Additionally, almost all the creators we give to removed their 1 dollar tier to deal with the fees already, bumping everyone to 2 dollars or more. I'm not seeing the harm to creators, I am seeing Patreon wanting to extract more out of it's userbase. And here's why - the fees have not been entirely shifted onto the patrons. The creators have to pay 5% of what's coming in. And the patrons now have increased fees too. I would love to see a comparative analysis showing whether or not Patreon is hiding a fee increase in the middle of this fee shift.

Anger. This feels like a money grab. Patreon's whole thing at the start was that they consolidated all the little payments together, allowing you to lump (and there by reduce) the transaction fees. Paypal charges 2.9%+$0.30 per. This is rather annoying for me - my wife and I donate minimal amounts to quite a few of our favorite artists, and so the donation extracted from our wallet will have to go up. Literally speaking, It means an extra 240USD out of my pocket every year in patreon's new fee system.
