Ashley

“Now to welcome our competing teams for the first round!” the MC exclaims, his voice echoing throughout the stadium amidst the roaring audience as soon as we appear on a volleyball court. “The first team is the one you’ve all been waiting for, the team nicknamed Chaos by the System! This team not only has Ashley on it, but it also has a Successor of Magic on it! The Magic Tyrant!”

I glance at someone named Rax, who apparently has the nickname ‘The Magic Tyrant’. He definitely stood out during our training thanks to his mastery of mana manipulation. So I guess his nickname would fit.

At least, if he wasn’t just Class C.

Someone with that nickname should at least be Class A or S, in my humble opinion.

Anyway, the MC continue speaking after throwing some flowery words our way, turning towards the other team as they appear, “And now we welcome their opponents! The team nicknamed by the System as Order! While this team doesn’t have as many big names on it, it does have an up and coming talent from The Order! The White Shadow!”

The audience continues to roar in excitement, but I just stare at the ball floating above the net. Pretty much ignoring most of the backstory behind this White Shadow person.

Except a few details about their powers, that is. Like how they use a special Order specific white shadow magic. One highly specialized towards justice and order.

They can also enter shadows and move around through them. Although all of the shadows he enters turn white in color.

I cross my arms while tapping my finger on my arm, just waiting for the MC to finish speaking and start the round. Which takes longer than I’d like.

Eventually they do finish though, at which point the ball hovering above the net begins to glow.

“Unlike a regular volleyball match, our volleyball game will only have one set per round,” the MC begins to further explain the rules. “The team that wins the set wins the round. And to win the set, a single team must have at least twenty-five points scored and have a two point lead over their opponent. To score a point, the player must hit the ball into the other side of the net without anyone hitting it back. Magic through mana manipulation is the only thing allowed in this. Even physical strength isn’t allowed beyond a set amount that is equal amongst all of the participants. There are two additional ways to win a set, however. But those are more brutal methods. One is to kill the entirety of the enemy team, and the other is to force the enemy team to surrender voluntarily.”

All of this was already explained during the separate team practice time, which means this announcement is either for the viewers or as a reminder.

Anyway, after the announcement, the MC finally declares the start of the round. At which point two people from each team rush up towards the floating ball. Meanwhile the other four set up different defenses spells to protect our side of the court.

Our side’s offense includes both me and that Magic Tyrant person. Meanwhile their offense includes that White Shadow person along with one other person who I don’t know anything about.

Still thanks to my inherently high natural speed from my Queen of Destruction Skill Tree – which is allowed even if physical strength is averaged out for everyone – I manage to make it to the ball at the same time as White Shadow. Which slightly irritates me because he clearly only manages to move that fast because he’s moving through shadows to do it.

Not that it matters in the end since I slam the ball towards his court at the same time as he slams the ball. With the ball heading straight towards his court instead thanks to the many ice spells I layered into the attack overpowering his order spells.

White Shadow isn’t a direct combat specialist after all. Or to be more specific, they use order magic. Which is stronger against people.

Not objects.

Thanks to this, my first purpose on the team is a success as the ball slams straight towards the enemy court. Even when one of the enemy team members rushes up to hit the ball back, it’s still a success.

Because the spells on the ball all activate, sending a blizzard, shards of ice, and various other attacks of ice all across their side of the court. Damaging them all through their defenses thanks to the True Damage while also blinding them.

Of course, the person who hits the ball does manage to send it back. But their return is weak thanks to all of the spells on my own hit.

And ice is probably just as good if not better at defense than offense, so I set up large walls of ice over the net. Blocking the ball before it can go over and leaving it falling to the ground on their side.

I feel the corner of my lips quirking upwards as I land back on my feet again, and the score on the side of the net changes to 1:0.

“And that’s the first point scored in the game, bringing the score up to 1:0 and giving the Chaos team the advantage right away!” the MC shouts even as the ice and snow continues covering the other side of the court.

Now that I’ve obscured the other side of the court with my snow, I’ve done my part in the team.

There are a couple other people on the team with more direct firepower than me, so my main goal was to obscure the other side and make it harder for them to play. And to break through their defenses with my True Damage right away.

The Magic Tyrant doesn’t hesitate. The moment he gets the ball to serve, he moves up to the net, jumps into the air, and hits the ball with more spell circles on it than I can count.

Making the ball shoot straight into the blizzard to score another point.

Unfortunately, there’s a rule that the server has the change every time, so we can’t just have him serve every single time. But he’s not the only strong person on the team. So we manage to get a third point with the next server by the time the blizzard is finally starting to clear up a bit thanks to the enemy team’s spells.

The fourth serve ends up being a bit more difficult now that they’re recovering, but we still manage it. Then the fifth turns into a volley between the two sides. And the sixth actually has the enemy team scoring against us instead. With the enemy team hitting our defenses – not just mine but our entire team’s defenses – multiple times back to back before managing to break through.

But that’s not why they score.

No. The reason they score is because the White Shadow somehow puts a spell on the ball that teleports it to the other side of our court.

Where there were few defenders, with none of them expecting the ball to suddenly head there.

Things turn back in our favor though when I manage to hit the ball in the next volley and recover their side with my ice and blizzard. Following which they hit it back and the Magic Tyrant slams it straight into their side to score another point.

Bringing our score to 6:1.

I grin at our rather large gap in points. And I’m not the only one as the audience and the MC are all going wild too, with the MC constantly praising team Chaos.

The enemy team doesn’t seem too pleased though. But that doesn’t matter as our pattern continues with very few interruptions all the way until we finally win the round.

Ending up with a final score of 25:8.

Both because of my ice’s interference and the Successor of Magic on our side pretty much dominating the game.

Time to see the other teams play.
