For older works during the wild west of dubbing, 100% with David here. So many liberties were taken to culturally sanatize older anime to appeal to a wider audience, even going so far to change the musical scores that felt too "unfamiliar." (see: 4kids dubs) Nowadays, however, Dubs tend to be a lot more culturally aware, with localization teams usually being fully immersed in the culture they're translating as to ensure any changes remain as faithful to the work as possible. Some are better than others, to be sure, and there is still value to hearing the original voice actors, but at a certain point it just comes down to personal preference.
