Sandy and Mike’s phone call in Eternal Flame (Discarded script)

Lucy and Mike smile at each other and walk their separate ways.

Mike returns home to a billion calls from Sandy. Another call comes through, he picks it up. Sandy should be woken up by now, it’s been a while. 

She lets him know she regrets what she did, that she’ll get a new hairdresser, and that she loves Mike immensely. Mike hesitates but ultimately is swayed and takes her back, especially as Sandy claims she cancelled the appointment she had on the day due to “illness”, she instead just wanted to talk to him. Like old times. 

They spend hours talking happily, and this encourages him to take her back. Gives him hope she’s changed.

Mike picks up the phone.

Mike: S-Sandy?

Sandy: Maishul?!?!? Oh my god, Maishul! (sobs)

Mike: Hey..  wait, don’t cry.. what’s wrong?

Sandy: You’re here! Where were you? I was so scared something happened to you.. I thought you.. 

(sobs) Don’t ever scare me like that again!

Mike looks pained.

Mike: I’m fine, I’m fine, I swear. I would never do anything drastic, I promise you. I’m sorry..

Sandy: No, _I’M_ sorry! I know I’ve made a grave mistake. After I hung up, I thought about it and.. 

Ugh, I don’t want a life without you! Imagine!! A life without you, I can’t.. I can’t!

I love YOU, Maishul. I still love you so so much, you mean so much to me, you love me for me, you’re the only one who does.. 

you’re the only one I can truly be myself with..

Everyone else, including Francis, like me for my looks and what I can do for them and NOTHING else. 

But you were there BEFORE all that!

You are the only one who matters.

Mike looks sad, almost like he doesn’t really believe her, kind of guilty about how this isn’t really affecting his feelings very much. There’s an implication he still feels hurt by her, betrayed. But he feels sad, regardless, not wanting her to suffer.

Sandy: And you were right, we should work more on this, I should work harder..

I’m gonna get a new hairdresser, I promise. I was just confused with Francis, I spent so much time with him, you know? That made a difference, that got into my head. He got into my head. My mother was right about him, it just wasn’t appropriate..

But I’m not confused with you..

Not at all..

Maishul, I’m so sorry..

Mike: (Pauses and looks down, looking frustrated but sad, conflicted) how.. how do I know it won’t just end up the same..?

You know, with the infrequent texts..

With finding someone else.. 

(Looks pained) I can’t expect you to hold your life back for me. It’s not like I haven’t felt the same.. after our call, I—..

Sandy: I’ll message you more often, I promise. I’ll try harder to show you that you matter to me..

It’s not like I have an excuse anymore, Francis is over! He’s done!! I’m replacing him! I’ve already set that in motion, I told my mother all about him already. She THOUGHT something was up..

I promise you, he’s toast <3 

Mike: You-wait, you don’t have to do that! I swear, you can’t just—

Sandy: I even took the day off today, I was meant to leave an hour ago for my interview, but I’ve been waiting for you. I wasn’t going to stop calling.

Mike: wha-really?

Sandy: I wanted to show I was being serious about this, I want it to be like old times.. Just sitting around and chatting and..

Mike: Wait, no! I don’t want you to change things for me!! You have important things to do! Don’t let someone like me stop you from-

Sandy: Maishul, it’s okay, it’s not a big deal! It’s just another gig I wanted to do, I have plenty of other gigs lined up! Honestly, maybe I should be working LESS, haha!

Mike: I.. don’t want to ruin things for you.. 

Sandy: I was ruining things for myself by breaking up with you! You’re.. 

.. my pillar, you know?

Mike: .. 

Sandy: I love you, Maishul. Only you. 

Mike: ..

Sandy: Can we please just try? Just one more time?

For me?

Mike: ..

Mike: But I..

Sandy: What time is it over there? Can we talk? Just like old times? Can I tell you about what I’ve been up to? Can I just be upfront and spill everything?

Sandy: Let me prove myself to you, give me a chance, please.

Mike: I.. 

Sandy: What would you like to talk about?

Mike: .. (expression softens but he’s still got his guard up) well..

Camera pans out, snow still falling. It gets dark. It’s implied they chat for many hours, Mike gets no sleep.
