I wouldn't say he never hinted at it. There were a couple of times when he tried to contact Sandy only to take it back after she didn't respond for a long time. Like right after Lucy said she didn't like Mike anymore. Even after the last Halloween segment, Mike went on about how much he's looking forward to hearing about her career exploits.

Totally agree! I also want to piggyback on the idea that Sandy also perhaps wants to slowly ghost Mike on her own. Sandy hasn't really ever had friends and she probably does care or even love Mike but more in a platonic sense. As you said, their relationship is very much idealized, and it's well known in the comic that Mike IS attractive, but her feelings are probably attached more to the past version of Mike and not who he is now. They really have nothing in common anymore and their lives are so different. Sandy isn't allowed to date nor has had any real friendships (I mean, she completely forgot Daisy!) so she probably doesn't know how to handle people outside of a work setting. I wonder if she's trying to ghost Mike on purpose?

I've been talking nonstop in the discord channels, but I will summarize and I think it will just be recapping others' comments:
Sandy - is certainly ignoring Mike, and likely because A: her job is draining her and B: his frequent texting and requests for attention further exhaust her, particularly as they combine with her guilt over not being more available
Mike - is certainly valid in his feelings and really does need to say this, and under different circumstances he might have even been able to lay out his feelings without being an acerbic, demanding child as he has been with every other altercation with his friends in recent memory.
And this exchange shows that they're both very much embedded in an idyllic childhood dream of their relationship and feelings for one another, and not invested in the people they have actually become over the last several years.

Honestly, I can see it from Sandy's POV that it might seem extremely harsh and out of left field. Knowing how Mike generally handles sensitive matters, this is guaranteed to end in a disaster as he just completely explodes at a situation that he never even previously hinted at. When I first started reading years ago, Mike was my favorite character, but I legit think he's my least favorite at this point. I get he's a teenager and teenagers are dumb, but how dumb do you have to be to keep making this mistake? Literally minutes after doing the same thing to Paulo? Ugh
I really hope I'm not supposed to feel bad for him when this inevitably ends poorly for him. I'm cheering for Sandy.
