Why havenât you reacted to BeyoncĂŠ -Listen Live on Oprah? Her studio version of the song is still her not going all out. She blew it out of the water live. Honestly, whatâs the deal with BeyoncĂŠ reactions? Itâs always Taylor Swift and everything else and it feels like we hardly get BeyoncĂŠ

Thank you for being so kind and understanding in my troubles with the subject. I truly enjoy being welcomed into the culture and history of different people. As we learn about others, we learn more about ourselves. It does make me feel sad that I feel scared to say things because I donât want to offend anyone, but I do want to learn. Thank you for teaching me.

Yeah, Audrey, just want to say Iâm sorry that you experienced people who came at you in that way. I wanted to add that these defensive fans are coming from a place of pain and frustration mostly. BeyoncĂŠ is the artist of our lifetimes for a variety of reasons, but one part is how she can incorporate Blackness and Black feminism into her art. The way she is able to explicate the Black experience makes so many of us feel seen, loved, protected and uplifted. Because all of this is tied up in her work, ignorance of certain things can feel like erasure of Black identity and humanity or downright denial of the Black struggle. And I think so many people, because we have more or less been trained to expect it, see the glass half empty and a lot of folks canât bring themselves to give the benefit of the doubt unfortunately. They automatically assume ill will or intent, or disregard intention wholly and only focus on impact aka how what was said made them feel.
You are so obviously coming from a good place of wanting to learn and know more. but because fans are used to people dismissing or discrediting her work and artistry because she is a black woman or because they donât understand, a lot of folks are in attack mode and assumed that because you didnât understand something, that you were cheapening her work, which isnât a fair assessment of your reactions. I noticed that on both the Cowboy Carter reaction and the Lemonade reaction. It means so much to them, that when someone even innocuously doesnât understand or doesnât latch onto a specific meaning or reference, it hurts them. I do think a lot more people should be more kind about educating someone who doesnât know or never had access to learning about our history and if you canât muster up the energy, just avoid leaving a comment and be on your way. Hope this makes sense and thank you yet again for a great reaction, Audrey!

Ugh⌠this is to this day, one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever been witness to. Stunning, moving, researched and glorious. All of it. There are a lot of themes here that might be worth discussing, but since you looked up what diaspora meant, I think the most potent of them is Pan-Africanism, which is a movement that advocates for black unity across the diaspora. I really think with this film moving through space and time, across continents and countries was a visual way of aiding in uniting our struggle, our beauty, our history and our future. All of the fashion, music, dancing style all showcase this as well, when thereâs so many things that want to divide us as a people. I love that an African-American woman curated this entire project and made sure to gather as many African artists as she could so it could be authentic and full of the heart, soul and culture that is so evident in the film, especially since African-Americans donât necessarily have that direct connection to their motherland and the culture of their ancestors because of the slave trade.
To answer some of your questions throughout:
- The womanâs whose voice you loved is Tiwa Savage, who is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. This is a side note, but a lot of the collaborators in this film/album are African (meaning born and raised on the continent of Africa) and there was a wide array of dialects/ languages, so no need to apologize for not understanding lyrics!
- The man who you recognized in the song âWaterâ is Pharrell, famed producer, singer-songwriter.
- Kendrick Lamar is featured on the track âNile.â It was the moment where you liked that their BeyoncĂŠâs voice was layered under his. He was the feature on BeyoncĂŠâs Freedom from Lemonade which you also watched the BET Awards Performance of!
- Jay Z in fact is from what you might call the âghettoâ or the âhoodâand it is the subject of much of his music. He grew up in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn.

I think that a lot of people mistake ignorance for racism. Youâre not racist you simply just donât know. And I think not knowing is okay as long as youâre open minded and willing to learn and hear from the people whose culture youâre partaking in. And Iâm honestly not surprised that a lot of people would be on the defensive because unfortunately that is what itâs like to be a black person in America or even in the world. But I can tell Audrey that you have good intentions and that nothing you say is ever malicious and so I wish people would just educate you if you are uncertain about something instead of getting mad at you because I donât want you to feel like you canât enjoy a culture different than yours

Wow thanks for this. Itâs been actually a hot minute since I watched this in full. To answer some of your questions. Black is King came out after Lemonade. And this is BeyoncĂŠâs interpretation and retelling of the Movie Lion King set to her âThe Giftâ album
