Borderlands 4 - HDR Optimized Settings

The game is NOT using/applying Xbox, Playstation or PC HDR Calibration app settings.

The game has an average HDR implementation as while it has good black levels (with no black level raise) it only offers a single Peak HDR Luminance slider (in nits value) which can only go up to 1.000 nits...but with a very curious bug.

Even if the game doesn't seem to support system level HDR Calibration (as when you change values there those will not be changed in-game on next game restarts) it may happen that on the VERY FIRST game launch, the game WILL actually read and apply system level HDR Calibration even going beyond the maximum of this slider (for example on an LG G3 you will see 1.500 nits written there, even if the maximum of the slider can go up to 1.000 nits). If this happens to you on the very first launch, DO NOT TOUCH THE SLIDER. Just accept it and move on otherwise it will be stuck to 1.000 nits max again and you will never go beyond that anymore :/

If that didn't happen to you and/or you touched the slider: except for older LG OLEDs where you can set this to 800 nits, for all the other display leave it to 1.000 nits and if it's still too dim for you (in HGIG), evaluate using Dynamic Tone Mapping on top.

Enjoy!

Did you mean FOV slider? That's more a personal preference. Personally I always stick with 90

Hello P! Any recommendation for the FOV* slider? Thank You!

Sebastian Rocha

Yes, set it to 800 (if you use HGIG). If it's too dim for you use DTM

I have a LG C2, is that considered an “older” model? Should I set the brightness to 800 nits or leave it at 1000?

Tom Eyerman

DTM should only be used if you can't set the in-game peak to your actual Peak Luminance, but on LG 2023+ OLEDs playing with HGIG will still be pretty bright even if can't do so (for example like this game when it can only go up to 1.000 nits but G4 can do 1.500) If you want a "set it and forget it" approach with G4 use HGIG and then try to setup system apps and games to 1.500 nits whenever you can

if I end up using DTM set to On wi LG G4 oled TV does that affect the visual quality as one claim that DTM set to On would affect the real HDR that game developer intended. Has there been test done with DTM set to On and with measurements hgig on LG G4?

Consider the game is total disaster optimization wise, maybe the worst UE5 so far, so my mod can for sure help a lot but can't completely fix it. Only devs can

Weird. I'm still getting stutters on my 5090 RTX
