Hello Beauties!
Thank you for joining me.
This Tutorial is a bit different as we will be looking at the social dance aspect of these older genres within Caribbean music. Specifically Jamaican Mento and Trinidian Calypso, which were often (and still are often) conflated together.

I am sharing with you how my grandmother, Zoe, danced to this music, as she was born and raised in Mandeville Jamaica in 1926. She grew up through and lived through the development ans peak of mento and Calypso and was an avid fan and dance enthusiast.

My grandmother Zoe sadly passed on July 13th 2016. I wish she could have showed and explained this to you herself. She would have loved every minute of it. I did my best to embody his essence but the reality is that her essence was her own. At the very least I am honoured to share with you what she shared with me, An immense love of dance and music. If you take anything from this tutorial and the practice videos, she would hope it was that you allowed yourself to fully feel the music and to move freely and joy every step, and that you got anyone nearby to get up and join you.

There will be a practice video to follow, and you know what probably one more because it's just such enjoyable music and nice to dance with less structure:)
