I know this is a lot of information but I wanted you to have a thorough reference for getting started in your quest for shiny things lol.

Without a doubt the most fun and exciting (and satisfying) Part of costuming making is getting to decorate your work and embellish it.
But it can also be overwhelming to know what to use, how to use it, what to search for etc, especially if you are new to sewing/costuming so I had done a video explaining various options I have used.

Also I Just wanted to also offer you some written examples of what to search for should you be doing most of your searching or acquiring online and some websites that I have used.

If you plan to use flatbacks you will need an appropriate glue, I am happiest with Gem Tak by Unique Creativ.
You will also need bent nose tweezers /rhinestones tweezers and/or a rhinestone wax stick. (Also known as a rhinestone picker, wax stick, rhinestone wax pencil, the brand I use is called "Crystal Katana").

Key words to use when searching for embellishments:
Rhinestone banding
Plastic Rhinestone Banding

Flatback Rhinestones
Sew on Rhinestones

For example if I was looking for a specific colour I might just Google "pink flatback 6mm pearls" on Google and see what options it gives. When searching it's best to specify the item content (ie glass or acrylic, potentially the colour, size and shape etc).

There are many, many, many vendors and websites, Google or your search engine of choice, will be a solid asset for you finding what you are looking for and seeing what vendors are in your region.


Depending on where you live there may be local businesses that vend such items. If you are located in a city with a "garment/textile district" it would be worth checking out what is available in person. The NYC, and LA garment/textile districts have some amazing trim, Bead, Rhinestones resources.

Marking tools that help for flatbacks and laying out your design are air/water erasable fabric pens. If there is a sewing or quilting shop near you it would be a good place to see what marking tool options are available.


I can say I have used this particular one and am very happy with it.  * I bought mine from a local-ish Ontario fabric store, but if you can't find them locally you can find them on Amazon etc*
