I've been dreading this post but it's been a week now, and it is time.
Years ago Dixie had broken her tail. Maybe you have noticed over the last couple years that the last four or more inches of her tail appeared smushed and non-functioning, definitely not as voluptuous as it had been the previous years. She could wag the base of her tail but the tip itself did not work.
We knew she broke or fractured her tail, but not sure how. The possibilities are endless. Their yard has everything from playgrounds to rock walls to trampolines, and of course other foxes.
There's nothing you can do for a broken tail unless it becomes problematic.
Earlier this week, we put her in her cage at night as we do many nights, in the morning her tail was a bloody mess. After a vet inspection it was clear that her tail had another break from about a week ago, And it was bothering her so she was messing with the tail and chewing on it.
Her tail had to be amputated 😭
Right now she has a couple inches of exposed bone tail, which means she needs to stay indoors until some of her hair grows back.
