BONUS: Walking 4,000 Miles with Holden Ringer

Hello all!

This month’s exclusive Patreon bonus episode is an interview with Holden Ringer, who recently finished walking more than 4,000 miles across the country from the starting point of LaPush, Washington. Holden is a 26-year-old originally from Dallas, Texas, and he used his odyssey to fundraise for the organization America Walks, as well as to raise awareness about active transportation and meet with fellow-minded advocates along the way. As he says, “Advocacy is built into the activity.”

Holden in Chattanooga in January, at the spot where two people were killed and one injured by a driver when they were walking on the sidewalk.

Not long after he reached the Atlantic Ocean in May, I sat with Holden in New York’s Bryant Park and talked about what he saw and learned during his year-plus odyssey on America’s roads, pushing a stroller he named Smiley.

I hope you enjoy our talk.

side note: does he really speak that fast? I can barely understand him. Or, does your editor time-compress his speech?

What's tragic is that Chattanooga is an incredible example of reinventing itself as a walkable city following years of industrial decline. But it still has awful car sewers with predictable results.

Chattanooga is the same place where a few of my friends and Safe Streets allies were mowed down by a drunken driver in 2021. One of them was the Vision Zero coordinator for the City of Atlanta, Kemberli Sargent. She died several months later from traumatic brain injury. The driver ran a red light on a state route in the middle of downtown and hit 5 people while they were crossing in a crosswalk.
