The Red Sleeve Ep. 16

Deokim is in trouble once again and it's up to Mama Maid and King San's mom to get her out of it. But even with that, its clear she's no longer safe with so many out to get her and San has just the solution...if she wants it. With the two finally together, Deokim begins her life as a married woman/concubine(?), and though San seems to be happy, she is clearly struggling. Apologies for the length of this reaction though this episode was longer than most, we did do a lot of talking/ranting. Please don't be mad at us. We love this drama but Deokim's character might be driving us a little nuts.

That scene of her waving at her former self is sad bc I feel like we all go thru that in life. We all at one point in time must wave goodbye to the past and start anew. Deokim is going thru the motions of accepting her new reality and I know It's not going to happen overnight. She chose this life but not everything will go according to the way she wants. Something I learned is you can't tell people how to react.. she never wanted to go back to the palace, she was forced under his mom. She couldn't go to queen dowager, because that's going against him. She couldn't stay with that dumb concubine bc of the abuse she was going thru. Even if she left someone would've brought her back anyway to get under the kings nerves (ie Queen dowager). She always has eyes on her. That night where he was going to come see her after the pregnancy news, she was going to say she loved him bc she was holding that little purse she made with his sisters. In last episode, the sisters said they would both give it to their husbands as a token of love, they also suggested her to give it to the king. I think that was her way of letting the audience know she was ready to tell him. But he didn't come and I totally understand why. He must visit the queen first as his duty. But she can still be sad about it. She chose this life but you can still feel the things you feel. And their banter was always this way, them teasing each other. She wasn't being a jerk on purpose lol. But I get it that you guys have a sour spot for her and I get that. Lord knows I wanted her to just say she loved him too. But seeing the things she's had to endure she wanted that little piece for herself and it totally is selfish, but she's always even from the beginning valued her freedom over everything. She wanted to retain that small piece of herself when everything else of her belonged to the king. We have to give her time to adjust because even though yes she made that choice not everything will be fixed over night. I feel bad for him too but this is the politics of being a king. She asked him that question "what if we were both commoners and not court lady and king?" And he said I couldn't imagine not being king. She knew where his priorities lie, and that's great for his position as king. But not the best husband as mama said. Deok Im loved Yi San the man, rather than Jeongjo the king. I loved rewatching this show with you both!! Not mad at you for voicing your opinions lol bc I get it. Just wanted to say these things from a different perspective. I'm sad it's almost over 😭

Thank you for accompanying me to rewatch The Red Sleeve (TRS) for the past 17 weeks. I'm a Lee Junho fan but only watched TRS once until the end. I wasn't mentally ready. I tried rewatching it several times, but always stopped at episode 10. With you guys, I had the courage to watch until the last episode. Please give your opinion about this drama as a whole.

Unlike a concubine who enters through a formal selection process, a court lady who has been bedded by the king doesn't immediately get a position as a concubine, but is in the status of a special court lady. Normally, if she gives birth to an heir, she'll be honored as the heir's biological mother and receive the title of official concubine. Hope this helps! And I love how you guys discuss this show so passionately☺️

It's no hard to understand actually. She loves him since the library days, since his fake teacher character. But she tries to stop herself for not loving him because loving a king won't bring her happiness. She's comparing him with all past kings, how did they threat their concubines before. Basically as a trash. So she doesn't want that kind a life. Isn't it fair? She's learning while living how he is different than other kings, from past stories. But as expected if he has to do something he'll do it. That can be relative with her someday. Also, as a concubine she has no rights for anything to do, only pleasure the king. And she didn't choose being the Queen's maid because politically the queen is the opposite side of the king. At the moment what duty queen wants doesn't important. If there is a case pop up she has to be against to the king. And probably she would never leave from queen's palace rest of her life. So she choose different suffer. I'm a Junho fan btw. But the king's "I don't care, it doesn't matter how you feel if you with me" sounds romantic because just he's saying it, lol. It's a horrible thing actually. Then she has no difference then a doll. Will sit there, you'll come to love her, then leave, then again. But as you said "the history" unfortunately.
