Chapter 7

Chapter 8 Volleyball

“The Mafia boss, a leader who rules a criminal organization, able to move any number of trusted members with one hand, willing to risk even his life for the family, surrounded by the respect and admiration of all, seen as a hero by the children of the slums…” Yamamoto was reading a book.

“Where did you get that?” Tsuna gasped.

“The little guy gave it to me.” Sawada couldn’t help but facepalm.

‘Of course he did.’

“So Gokudera is joining your family too then?”

“Well it’s a bit more than that...he likes me...likes me…” Yamamoto just laughed.

“Yeah I had a feeling.” Tsuna twitched in surprise.

“You did!?” Takeshi nodded.

One might call it instinct or gaydar, but Yamamoto had a feeling that Hayato wasn’t really the angry boy he was portraying. Having carried a torch for Tsuna, he could see himself in him. “He had the look of someone wanting something but not sure if they could obtain it.”

“Yamamoto-kun…”

“Reading this, you’d make a good mafia boss.” He said.

Tsuna had this weird look on his face. “Well...I don’t know if I want to be a mafia boss.” Takeshi just laughed.

“I thought so, why don’t you give sports a try.”

“Hm?” Takeshi had friends in all the sports teams, and while he was the star baseball player, his athletic abilities had him on call when they needed assistance. Having him on a team was like having three players, Yamamoto was so quick to adapt he could get the feel of other sports easily.

He promised himself he’d support Tsuna, no matter what, and that included helping him figure himself out. A career in sports could be what Tsuna needed, if he didn’t want to be boss.

The volleyball team had a game coming up, and were down a few players. They would have to forfeit if they don’t fill in some spots. Weirdly enough they all got food poisoning at the same time. “Sure I’ll give it a try!”

Tsuna was really impressed with Yamamoto, he was taking this whole mafioso thing really well. He still didn’t know how to feel about it, and he was supposed to be the future boss. “What am I going to do about Gokudera-kun? He’s still interested in me.”

“You could just date him to.”

“Ehh?”

Takeshi flipped through some pages. “Harems aren’t uncommon in the mafia world, there is a bit of issue with “legitimate heirs” but that’s not exactly a problem for us. Some bosses have a wife or marriage to produce an heir having same sex partners as primary choice of love making.” Tsuna’s jaw dropped. “Though one can have a harem and not be a mafioso.”

Tsuna didn’t know what to expect; anger, jealousy, seemed to be more common reactions. This was throwing him for a loop. “If you two date, you can get to know each other better and figure out if you are right for each other.” Takeshi blushed. “Though if I may be selfish, I’d prefer if you fucked me first. I’d like to be Tsuna’s first wife, if that makes sense!” He said with a warm smile.

How could a guy be so damn cute and talk about a harem scenario. Takeshi placed a hand on Tsuna’s chest. “If you had a harem, I bet you’d make a lot of guys happy, you’d love them all so much because that’s the kind of guy you are Tsuna…” The two blushed.

“Yamamoto-kun…”

“Tsuna…”

The air around them began to get all lovey dovey.

“Judaime!” Gokudera called.

“Oh morning Gokudera-kun!” The silver haired male came into the room looking slightly disheveled. “What happened to you?”

“Some punk was talking trash about you, so I taught him a little lesson, may have gotten carried away. Hehe!” He dusted himself off.

Tsuna sweat dropped. “Please don’t do that.”

“I have to, no one is allowed to disrespect the tenth!”

“Hahaha, you sure are passionate.” Gokudera twitched.

“So you’re Yamamoto?” He eyed Takeshi.

“Sure am, but you really should ease up, if you go around fighting all the time, you’ll just end up causing more problems for Tsuna.” The words were true, and shattered Gokudera.

“I’ll cause trouble for Judaime….” The idea seemed to physically pain Hayato.

“Ugh don’t worry about that, you’re hurt!” Tsuna pointed out.

Gokudera blushed. “It’s just a few scratches.”

Yamamoto got Tsuna some medical tape, which he used to help patch Gokudera up. “Please be more careful Gokudera-kun.”

“Okay…” His heart fluttered.

Takeshi chuckled. “It’s best not to make Tsuna worry, he’s got a big heart you know!” This made Tsuna blush a bit.

“Tch, I don’t need you telling me that. I’ll have you know I’m going to be Judaime’s right hand man!”

“That’s nice, I’m gonna be Tsuna’s first wife!” He said confidently.

Gokudera growled, coming off more puppyish then normal.

A little later they learned that Mochida was in the nurse’s office. It seems since their little duel he’s been having issues. While the school’s over all opinions of Tsuna had risen Mochida was still eating sour grapes. He was openly bad mouthing Tsuna when Gokudera overheard and well...boom!

Mochida’s ego was hurt with his loss to Tsuna, being the “big man” he was he couldn’t let it go. He still wanted to see Tsuna as No Good, and wanted to remind people of who Tsuna was.

Tsuna, Yamamoto, and Gokudera went to the volleyball club. “You’ll really help us?” The captain exclaimed, tears in our eyes.

“Uh sure, if you’ll have me.”

“If Judaime is in, I’m in!” Hayato said.

“This is great, not only will we have the hero, but the new transfer student as well!”

Tsuna blinked. “Hero?”

The captain nodded. “Of course, after you beat Mochida-sempai, we’d love to have you on the team. That strength will help lead us to victory.”

“Now hold on, I’m not exactly the best at sports. I’ll do my best but it’s gonna be your teamwork that’s gonna decide the game.” Tsuna wasn’t sure betting on him to win the game was a good idea, especially since he was a newbie. Standing up to Mochida was different than this.

Mochida wasn’t as popular as he thought he was, sure he was the captain of the kendo club, and their senior, but he was a prick. His attitude towards women was poor and chauvinistic. The guy believed in a pecking order and those that tried to go against that needed to be taught a lesson. His popularity if any came from his skills on the kendo team which only got him so far. He acted like the big man on campus, which rubbed people the wrong way.

Tsuna taking him down a peg made him a hero in many eyes.       “If the hero who beat Mochida joins us we have nothing to fear!” Sawada wanted to face palm.

The captain was under a lot of pressure, their three best players were taken out after all and a lot was riding on this game. “Let’s do our best and have fun!” Takeshi said.

“We are gonna win!” Gokudera said confidently.

News got around that Tsuna was gonna be playing in the big game. “What that loser is representing us!?” Mochida was pissed. ‘Has the world gone mad, this is No Good Tsuna, he sucks at everything. Why would they let him play in such an important match.’

The guy was torn, if they won Tsuna would get more praise and popularity, but if they lost it’d be a blow to the school’s reputation on the other hand Tsuna would be blamed and he’d go back to being the school’s punching bag.

“Sawada again huh?” A tan young man smirked. “This might be the guy I’m looking for!” He had witnessed Tsuna’s fight with Mochida, so he had his eye on him since. “Let’s see if he can go the distance. Show me that you have the power to go Extreme!”

His sister was really excited for the big game and told him everything. The school’s stadium was packed. “Come on big bro, we are gonna be late!”

“We won’t be late, let’s go!” Ryohei Sasagawa said confidently. As the two walked to the stadium Ryohei noticed Mochida talking to the enemy team about something. ‘What is he up to?’

Sasagawa was always looking for new talent for the boxing club. Mochida despite his athletic skill didn’t have the right spirit for boxing.

The game started and Tsuna was feeling a bit nervous. “Are you okay Tsuna?” Takeshi asked.

“I am this is just new for me. It’s kinda exciting though. You must be used to this Yamamoto-kun!”

“It’s always intense before a big game, but it can be thrilling!”

“We got nothing to worry about, with Judaime on our side, we are sure to win!” Gokudera said passionately.

“You really think too much of me.” Tsuna sweatdropped.

When the teams hit the court Tsuna got the oddest sense. The enemy team were focused on him for some reason. ‘Why are they looking at me like that?’

When the game started sure enough they made sure to try and hit the ball towards Tsuna’s way. Sawada did try his best, but he wasn’t ready for this kind of onslaught. “It seems the enemy has discovered the weak link and are exploiting it, what will you do Tsuna?” Reborn wondered.

The enemy team was racking up the points in the first half. ‘See, you are just a loser, learn your place!’

“Sorry guys!” Tsuna said.

“What’s with them it’s like they are trying to aim for Judaime!”

“They are, its not against the rules, if the team spots an opening they will go for it.”

“I’ll blast those jerks!” Gokudera hissed.

“I’m really sorry guys…” Tsuna hated this feeling, it was like he was letting everyone down. He didn’t want to be a burden to them. ‘Maybe things were better when I didn’t try...when I didn’t have people relying on me...maybe…’

“Tsuna!” Takeshi grabbed him and snapped him out of his spiraling thoughts. “Don’t lose hope the game isn’t over.”

“This sucks!” One of the volley ball club guys said.

“We shouldn’t have let this guy on the team if he was gonna suck this bad.” Tsuna hung his head.

“Are you even playing for real?”

“This is important to us!”

“Sorry...I…”

“Shut up!” Gokudera snapped, not yelling at Tsuna but the club members. “Judaime didn’t ask for this, he wanted to try this out yes, but yal jumped at him joining thinking he was gonna save you all or something. Judaime is great, but he’s one guy who’s never played this before. He’s trying damn it!”

They were the ones who needed help, their club didn’t have many members so didn’t have substitutes prepared for this situation. The crowd watching could talk smack jeer and boo all they want but the reality of the court was intense, if any of them thought they could do better they should have volunteered to help the team out when they were in trouble.

“Yeah...Tsuna...sorry...I shouldn’t have put so much pressure on you, I kinda passed the buck.” Having the world on your shoulders can be a lot. They’ve been training and working really hard to win this game and other games. Tsuna could see it in their bodies, the hours of practice and drills, the hard work they put into this game. “It’s not over, we can still do this!”

“I’m not giving up, I’ll do the best I can!”

“Do that and we’ll support you!” Takeshi said.

“If they gonna aim for the Tsuna, let’s use that.” Takeshi showed Tsuna some moves, and they went back on the court.

The team kept the heat on Tsuna but this time he was ready. Getting out of his head, he was able to focus on the people and he began to read them. ‘Let’s do this!’

When the ball came his way Tsuna did his best to knock it up, this set up for Yamamoto to spike. “What the hell?!” Mochida gasped.

Ryohei whistled.

‘Come at me then, I’m not giving up!’ They thought it was a fluke but Tsuna was adapting, getting used to their movements and the flow of the game. The team gave him back up some hits that were beyond him were caught by someone else.

The enemy was focused on striking against Tsuna so they weren’t watching when Gokudera made his move, intercepting the ball and dealing a punishing spike. Tsuna went for the ball once or twice, but it was a feint for either Gokudera or Yamamoto to spike. Soon the enemy began focusing on the threats, which allowed Tsuna to sneak a ball in and score a point. “I thought he couldn’t play!”

He couldn’t but Tsuna was uniting the team, he may have been the most inexperienced player, but his refusal to give up helped motivate the team. The enemy tried to exploit his inexperience so the team used it to their advantage.

Add this to Yamamoto’s terrifying serve that couldn’t be stopped, and Gokudera’s explosive jump that gave him wild reach making a terrifying offense and defense. The tides of the game changed and they entered a sudden death round.

‘What is happening this shouldn’t be this close!?’

“What spirit, go go!” Ryohei cheered. His blood was pumping.

The guys had one last huddle. “Tsuna, Yamamoto, Gokudera, thanks for filling in, win or lose we appreciate your help.” The captain said.

“This is intense but it’s also kinda fun. I...I wanna win!” Tsuna declared.

“Tsuna…” Takeshi smiled. “Then let’s win this!”

“Yeah!!!”

They hit the court and the enemy was intimidated. In a sudden death match, the first to strike a point wins, Tsuna was in the front left position with Gokudera and Yamamoto were to his right. Aiming for Tsuna at this point was too risky as it left them open to a counter. They thought defending against the real threats was important.

So when it looked like Gokudera was gonna spike they moved to defend. “Judaime!” He passed the ball to Tsuna who jumped with all his might and knocked the ball into the unguarded area.

It was a team effort and they won!

“Not bad, I’ll have to give my student a reward.” Reborn said with a smirk.
