Chapter 4 Viridian Contest!

Ash made it to the center for some much needed rest and recovery. Spearow was an angry bird at first, but since he was caught, he mellowed out a bit. He witnessed the power Ash was able to draw out of his Pokemon and he wanted it to.

Ketchum scanned him.

Dexter: Spearow the Tiny Bird Pokemon. Power Level 5, Special Ability Keen Eye. Moves Peck, Growl, Leer, and Fury Attack

Ash already had an idea on how to train his two flying types. He called on Pidgey. “I’d like to give you the name Gale, a name that embodies the gale force winds.” Pidgey loved his new name. “I’d like to give you the name Tornado, a fierce force of nature just like you!” Spearow liked the name.

Bezai filled Tornado in on Ash’s goals and got him caught up to speed. Tornado didn’t really have anything against either profession, he just wanted to get stronger and if his trainer’s paths made him so, he’d show off that strength.

Ketchum was able to register for the Kanto League at the center. “Is there any gyms here?” He asked Nurse Joy.

“There is, but it’s currently under repairs, but it’ll be ready in a few months.” She gave Ash his official League Cash Card

‘Months?!’ They couldn’t wait here that long. ‘Maybe it’ll be best if we come back for this gym later.’ Ash thought. “What about a Contest Hall?”

“You are in luck, there is one in town and there is a contest just two days away.” It was the first contest in Kanto.

“Can I register for the Kanto Grand Festival here?” She shook her head no.

“Sorry, you’ll have to take care of that at the Contest Hall.” Since he had two days to prepare Nurse Joy also suggested he could train in Route 22 and catch some new Pokemon as well. “There is also the Battle Club!”

“Battle Club?” He hadn’t heard of that.

“It’s quite new, built by the Don family. There’s a few across Kanto, you can go there to train and battle trainers.” That sounded pretty cool. He could use it to train his moves and strengthen his Pokemon.

“Where is the next Gym?” He asked.

“In Pewter City!” She gave him a map. “You just travel through Viridian Forest and you’ll reach Pewter City in a few days.” He nodded in understanding.

He decided to get some rest since it was so late. Bezai got Ash up bright an early and they went to the Contest Hall to register. The place was awesome, besides the reception desk there were large berry blenders for making Pokeblock. Ketchum registered and got his Kanto Coordinator Pass. “This will let you take part in any contest in Kanto, you’ll need five ribbons to enter the Grand Festival.” He entered the Viridian Contest. “You can enter up to two pokemon for contests, one for performance and one for the battle round, of course you can use one pokemon for both rounds, but you can’t switch.”

“Thank you!” It was good to know. He was given a Ribbon Case.

Ash registered Bezai and Kaido. Bloom was a little sad about it. “Sorry Bloom, you’ll get to be in a contest, but plan for you to be the starter at the Pewter Gym!” That was a good compromise. Bezai was battle ready, and Kaido’s been working on his hopping in a performance capacity. They took a tour of the contest hall and were amazed at the stage and the stands. Some trainers were practicing with their tools.

“Let’s do some training at the Battle Club!” Time was short but they had the means to prepare. They went to the club and met Don George. He was a tall and passionate man.

Ash was given a Battle Pager. “You can use this to register at any Battle Club in Kanto, you’ll get a page if a trainer wishes to battle any of your pokemon.” They also had apparatus to train Pokemon for battles.

He registered for the club and his info was added to the database. “If you win ten battles you can challenge me or one of my Battle Masters.” His staff were skilled trainers who knew all sorts of moves and could teach Pokemon.

Along with the battle rooms, there were training rooms, exercise rooms, dorms, and storage. “If you come by when we are hosting tournaments we offer some pretty awesome prizes!” Ash liked Don George he had a bountiful energy to him.

“I’d like to use one of your training rooms please!” Don George nodded and led Ash to a room he could use.

“Our vending machines offer tasty drinks to help replenish energy. Please enjoy your stay.” Ash nodded. They also had practice dummies they could use moves on.

“This place will serve us well.” Ash had Bloom train against a dummy, they needed to figure out the best style for his Vine Whip.

Bezai set up a Barrier for Kaido to work on his bouncing against. He was quite impressive. “Karp Karp!”

Ash had Gale train his Gust on a dummy, working on the move that Ketchum wanted him to master. As for Tornado Ash had him working on Peck. The dummies could only take so much punishment.

Thankfully Bezai’s usage of Barrier for training allowed the move to be mastered. They materialized three barrier walls at once, giving Bloom, Gale, and Tornado something sturdier to attack.

“Bloom Tough Style Vine Whip!” Bloom unleashed some super thick vines, they hit hard shattering one of the barriers. “Nice hit Bloom!”

“Bulba!” The monster beamed at the praise.

Gale and Tornado worked hard at their barriers but didn’t manage to break them. “Keep it up you guys!”

He was gonna have Bezai put up some more barriers, but got a buzz on his pager. “Already?” Oh yes, Ash had an Exeggcute not the most common of Pokemon, so interest in battling was high.

Ketchum convinced trainers to do a three versus three match, so his other Pokemon could get in some training and battle experience to. This was a win-win for Ash, as some of these guys and gals have come from Route 22 and Viridian Forest so it was good to see what kind of monsters were in the area.

Gale took on a few Pidgey and won, growing stronger from each battle. He had his mon continue to use Gust, working towards that mastery.

If the trainer had Spearow, Ketchum used Tornado. He used his Peck and Fury Attack, he was a fierce battler.

When his opponent used Rattata, Ash called out Kaido, this got some laughter from his opponent. It was cut off as Kaido bounced around the arena, his hopping power allowing him to dodge attacks over and over. Don George took notice of this. After awhile the Rattata became exhausted and Ash would switch out so another monster could finish it off.

Not the most glorious of battles but word began to spread about Ash’s weird Magikarp. Some trainers didn’t even get to battle Bezai, their teams taken out. Bezai didn’t mind, they knew the other mons needed time to catch up to his level.

He got to fight trainers with Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, and Kakuna, as well. The Bug Types were cool but were no match for Ash’s flying types. One girl did have a Pikachu, but Bloom took out the Electric type with a Leech Seed and barrage of Vine Whip.

Some trainers had some Poison pokemon, fresh from route 22 there were Nidoran M and Nidoran F. Ash had to have Bloom beat these monsters, but it was good experience. There was even a few trainers with Poliwags and Goldeen.

After several matches and rematches Ash scanned his monsters to gauge their power levels.

Bezai: 16

Bloom: 12 (He also learned Razor Leaf)

Kaido: 8

Gale: 6

Tornado: 7

“Hmm, I guess you’ll get more experience if you had an offensive move.” Kaido sulked.

“There may be a way.” Don George approached him. “Your Magikarp has incredible jumping power, I believe I can teach it a special move.”

“What do you say Kaido?” Ash asked.

“Karp!” He was in.

The move was Bounce. Kaido was able to learn this move because of all of Ash’s training with him. He bounced into the air, doing an elegant spin, before diving down and striking the ground.

They had to work on the accuracy a bit, but it was the perfect move for Kaido. Ash felt they could get this move down, and with some contest flare.

He got to challenge Don George who proved to be a much stronger opponent. His Raticate was a beast! He beat Gale, Tornado, Kaido, Bloom, and even proved a tough fight for Bezai. They set up a barrier, and not for a last ditch Hypnosis and Leech Seed, the fight would have been over.

Since Ash won Don George helped him learn a new move. He called out his Fearow and it helped Tornado learn Tailwind.

Don George had quite the roster, he usually used one of these; Raticate, Ivysaur, Charmeleon, Wartortle, Fearow, and a Pidgeotto. Defeating one of his pokemon for new trainers wasn’t easy.

Ash went to the center for some healing. He spent another day training Bezai used Clever Style Barrier, creating a box around them. Kaido used Bounce against it, they worked on style, adjusting the spin in the air to show off, while building power before striking.

Gale mastered Gust, and Tornado mastered Peck, they got to train twice as fast thanks to Tailwind. The move doubled their speed for three attacks. So they worked hard and fast.

Bloom figured out that Clever Style of Vine Whip worked like a unique Wrap attack. He also learned to use Vine Whip to dodge by launching him up into the air.

Another day of training began as trainers wanted to face Ash again. He surprised them using Kaido’s Bounce, he not only dodged attacks but hit hard. It was a wonderful boost in confidence.

Soon people were wanting to battle Ash’s weird Pokemon and he hadn’t even used the stylish moves. Kaido reached level 10 and learned Tackle.

Damian spotted Ash. ‘Look at him, thinking he’s a big shot. I’ll just have to put him in his place!’

Ketchum had earned enough wins to challenge Don George or one of the Battle Masters. “Would you like to schedule a battle today?”

“Sorry, but I have an important contest tomorrow and my Pokemon need rest.” There was a pause.

“EHH?!”

“You’re a coordinator!?”

“For real!?” No one could believe a coordinator could be so skilled.

Don George simply laughed. “So that’s where you get your flare from, good luck with your contest. I’ll be here when you wish to battle.” Ash nodded. George was a good man, respecting all sorts of trainers.

“I’ll do my best!” He meant it. All the trainers Ash battled were curious to see him in action at a contest.

-x-

Gary had just finished training in Route 22 and was coming back to the center for some rest. Chansey was looking after the center, which was packed as those that couldn’t get tickets took to viewing at the center. He wasn’t expecting to see Ash on TV. “Ladies and gentleman we have our next contestant Ash from Pallet Town!” Lillian announced.

‘It’s Ash!’ Seeing Ash perform flipped a switch in Gary, causing his heart to flutter.

Ketchum was in his Contest Outfit, this included a big poofy hat, a red vest, baggy pants, and some pointy shoes. ‘What is he some kind of genie?’ Ash’s odd fashion choices aside he was showing off quite a bit.

“Kaido, come forth!” He shocked both the audience and the judges calling on a Magikarp. Kaido flopped on the stage, causing the audience to laugh thinking Ash had made a mistake. ‘Wait till they get a load of this!’

Ash had Kaido show off Splash in some crazy ways, having Magikarp hop through hoops, and bounce around on land. There was a water tank on stage for water Pokemon but they’d use that soon! “Now Bounce!” Wham!

Kaido went sailing into the air, spinning like a ballerina, before doing a vertical spin towards the pool. He hit the water hard causing a big splash. “Now Tackle!” Surging through the water Kaido showed off his speed and power with a brilliant tackle attack.

Mr. Contesta, Mr. Sukizo, and Nurse Joy were amazed, it was a stunning performance. It caught everyone off guard and captured their attention. Kaido heard the applause and a wave of joy washed over him. He was so happy he jumped out of the pool and into Ash’s arms. “Karp Karp Karp!”

Ash just laughed. “You did great!”

Gary watched the performance, a blush blooming on his cheeks. “Oh wow!” A wave of excitement washed through him.

It was Ash’s debut contest, and he passed the performance round with flying/bouncing colors. Next was the battle round, and Ash and Bezai were ready to shine.
