Chapter 3 First Catches

Ash checked his Pokedex to scan Bezai. He had two mastered moves and a power level of 14. “Nice!” Ash praised.

He looked to his new starter Pokemon. Bulbasaur was scanned.

Dexter: Bulbasaur the Seed Pokemon, special ability Chlorophyll, Power Level 5. It carries a seed on its back right from birth. As it grows older, the seed also grows larger. Tackle, Growl, Vine Whip

“Welcome to the Team Bulbasaur!”

“Bulba.” The monster nodded. Bezai and him got along, them being grass types did help.

“I’d like to give you a nickname, is that okay?” Bulbasaur was curious. “I’m gonna call you Bloom!” He blushed, liking the name.

Ash went home to get his stuff, and Bloom joined the walk around gang. Bezai filled him in on the kinds of training they’d be doing as Ash talked about his goals. Upon arrival Ketchum was met with a surprise party with his mom and some of the neighbors wishing him well.

He received some going away gifts, a sleeping bag, a tent, a pokeblock case, an outfit for contests, and a simple fishing rod. Delia gave him her old cooking set. Ash packed his pajamas, got his treasured League hat, a few performance tools, he also got a few magazines and guidebooks.

Before they left Ash showed Bulbasaur some recordings of contests and league battles. Both were quite interesting. “I wish to become a Pokemon Master, taking on both Gyms and Contests is necessary to accomplish that goal.” Bloom was surprised and inspired by the ambitions.

Ketchum said his goodbyes and thanked his mom for everything. “Bezai, Bloom, look after Ash for me!”

“Mom!” Ash blushed.

“Eggs/Bulba!” The monsters agreed.

As they left for Route 1, they talked about doing some training. Since Bezai was higher level, and had two mastered moves it was only logical that Ash focus on training Bulbasaur. “Now let’s see, Route 1?” From his guidebook he read he could find Oran berry bushes and trees.

Dexter: Route 1 holds several grassy areas and trees where pokemon can be found. There is also a river containing Pokemon. Common Monsters are Rattata and Pidgey, Uncommon are Spearow, Rare are Oddish and Bellsprout, by fishing you can find Goldeen and Magikarp.

“Alright let’s go catch our first Pokemon!”

“Eggs/Bulb!” His monsters cheered.

The first monster they spotted was a Pidgey, it wasn’t a good type match up, but he didn’t have many options. Bulbasaur battled it, but it ended up flying away. The next monster was a Rattata, but it also ran away. “Bulba…” Ash patted his head.

“It’s okay Bloom, we’ll keep trying.” The fights did give some experience.

Ash tried a hand at fishing. He wasn’t the only one, he saw Gary fighting with an orange haired girl over a fishing spot. They weren’t touching that and decided to fish up river.

Ketchum found some Oran Berries and after a snack, he used the berries as bait to try and lure a Pokemon. It worked and he reeled in a Magikarp. “Karp Karp Karp Magikarp!”

Dexter: Magikarp the Fish Pokemon, a Water Type. Because all Magikarp seem to do is splash around, some consider them weak, but they’re actually a hardy pokemon that can survive in water no matter how dirty it is. It jumps very well and can evolve into Gyarados.

“Bloom grab it with Vine Whip!”

“Bulba!” Vines shot out from his bulb, and he grabbed Magikarp.

“Monster Ball Go!” He threw the ball and it hit Magikarp.

Jiggle...Jiggle...Jiggle...Ping!

“Hehehe!” Ash cheered. “My first catch!” Magikarp was registered to his Pokedex. He was level 6, his ability was Rattled. “Come on out Magikarp!” The monster was called forth and he was greeted happily and given a berry.

“Hold it!” Ash turned.

‘It’s that girl that was arguing with Gary.’ She stepped up to them.

“What do you think you are doing?”

“Fishing…” She glared.

“I’ll have you know I’ve claimed this whole area as my fishing spot!” Ash and his monsters sweat drop.

“And who are you?” She smirked.

“I’m Misty, a Water Pokemon Master!” She boldly declared while striking a pose. Ash hadn’t heard of any water Pokemon masters named Misty. There was Lorelei of the Elite Four who was a Water and Ice type specialist, and this was not her.

“Well even if you are a Water Pokemon Master, this is a public Route. Anyone can fish here.”

“You sound just like the last punk, just not as arrogant.” She pulled out a monster ball. “If you want to fish here, you’ll have to beat me in a battle!”

‘Not that we have to but…’ Ash really wanted to have a Pokemon Battle. He looked to Bezai and Bloom and they were ready to go. Magikarp seemed...concerned? “I’ll accept your challenge what are the terms?”

Misty looked over his Pokemon. “How about a three on three?”

“I just caught this Magikarp we haven’t had time to train yet.” Misty laughed.

“You are just saying that because you know Magikarp is the weakest of all Water Pokemon!” Magikarp hung his head.

“Karp…”

“That’s not nice, Magikarp is a great Pokemon!”

“Only because it can evolve into Gyarados which I’ll admit is a pretty powerful Water type. Magikarp on the other hand can only learn basic Normal type moves, hardly fitting of a Water Type.”

“Magikarp isn’t great just because it can evolve into something cool. Magikarp is a good Pokemon and with the right training can do amazing things.” Ash’s words touched Magikarp. “You call yourself a Water Pokemon Master yet you insult the type you claim to love.”

“I do love water Pokemon, they really are the best in the whole world!” She gushed.

“How about a Two v Two, my Bloom and Bezai against your Pokemon? I still need time to train Magikarp, it’s not fair to send him into battle without training.”

“Fine, Fine! Let’s do this! The faster I beat you the faster I can get back to fishing!” She called out her first Pokemon which was Goldeen.

“Did...did you just catch this Goldeen?”

“Indeed I did!” She had been training it for a bit, having it battle Magikarp in the area.

“Goldeen!” It glanced at Ash’s Magikarp and looked ready to attack it.

“Bloom I choose you, Magikarp watch this battle okay?” Magikarp pulled back and gave them room.

The battle between Bloom and Goldeen went as expected, Ash had a clear type advantage even with Goldeen knowing Peck. Vine Whip helped lay the smack down on the fish monster.

Misty called out Staryu next. “My Staryu is a much higher level!” She declared.

It used Confuse Ray to disable Bloom’s movements. He began to hurt himself in confusion. Staryu used Water Gun and Swift and Bloom was knocked out. “Hahaha, that’s the power of a Water Pokemon!”

“You did great Bloom.” He gave him a berry to recover. “You ready Bezai?”

“Eggs!” They were more than ready.

“Time to scramble some eggs!”

“Bezai use Leech Seed!” A seed was fired and it hit, ivy wrapping around Staryu. Their energy was zapped.

“Staryu use Rapid Spin!” The star monster was able to escape the bindings. “It won’t be that easy to stop my Staryu!” The monster spun through the air towards Bezai.

“Use Reflect!” They raised a barrier and increased their defenses.

“Staryu use Swift!” Stars pelted Bezai.

“Use Absorb!” He drained Staryu’s energy and recovered.

“Use Water Gun!” The move was strong despite not being super effective. Staryu had a power level of 20, six higher than Bezai. They were hanging tough.

Absorb hit Staryu again and drained their energy. “That won’t be enough to beat us!”

“Alright Bezai, let’s show them, it’s Show Time!” He snapped his fingers.

“Eggs!”

“What?” Misty gasped. “Staryu use Confuse Ray!”

“Hypnosis Beauty Style!” Bezai used his mastered move, one head’s eyes glowed yellow, another blue, another green, one red, another purple, while the cracked one peeked out some orange. The hypnotic waves twisted into a rainbow of colors.

It overwhelmed Confuse Ray and Staryu got put to sleep. “Staryu no!” She was shocked at the strange move. Bloom was impressed.

‘So this is mastering moves!’ He was so excited. Magikarp was curious about the stylish move.

“Now use Leech Seed!” Staryu became seeded.

“Staryu use Rapid Spin!” They were fast asleep.

Bezai used Absorb getting fully recovered. Misty kept calling for moves, but Staryu was in a deep slumber. Their energy was drained and with Absorb landing again Staryu was down for the count.

The battle was over and Ash won! “How did you do that?”

“I’m also training to be a coordinator.”

“I lost...to a coordinator…” She slumped to the ground. Ash twitched in annoyance.

“And with that we are leaving.”

“Wait I have another Pokemon...get back here!” They ignored her and left Misty to her tantrum.

Ash and Bezai filled Magikarp in on their goals and plans. “By mastering moves you can do a lot, and even if you lack offensive moves you can be a great performer. Gym Battles, Contests, and more we working together!” Magikarp was moved. “I’d like to give you a name, one of great power and strength. I’m gonna call you Kaido!”

Kaido was happy with his new name and they began to do some training. He had incredible jumping power so Ash worked with that. He had Bezai spar with Bloom, putting up a barrier with Reflect and having the Bulbasaur attack it with his moves. “We’ll get stronger in different ways.”

The sparring was good training, giving experience to both monsters.

Bezai’s Absorb evolved into Mega Drain. Bloom learned Leech Seed and Razor Leaf. Kaido was working hard, training his jumping power. For some contest training Ash had Kaido jump through a hoop, it was good training on land.

He had the basic performer tools set, a hoop, a frisbee, and some balls for juggling.

They continued exploring Route 1 and found a Pidgey. Bloom was able to shine, with Leech Seed he was able to snag Pidgey and drain his energy. “Nice work Bloom, Monster ball go!”

It hit Pidgey and sucked him up. Jiggle...Jiggle...Jiggle...Ping!

“We caught a Pidgey!” Ash exclaimed, happy about his latest catch.

Ketchum prepared lunch, while the mons filled Pidgey in on the plan. As they ate Ash checked his Pokedex on his new Pidgey.

Dexter: Pidgey the Tiny Bird Pokemon. Power Level 3, Special Ability Tangled Feet. Moves Tackle, Sand Attack, and Gust.

After a good meal it was time for more training. He had Pidgey spar with Bezai, Kaido did solo training, and Ash had Bloom train with Vine Whip against a tree.

His efforts were rewarded as Bloom mastered the move, but…

From the tree a pokemon fell from it and landed on it’s head. “Spearow!” The cry sent chills down their spines.

“Oh man…” This was not a fight they could win, beating one Spearow was easy, but that cry of anger was also a cry for help. A swarm was gathered and charged forcing Ash and his party to run. He swiftly returned Kaido and Pidgey to their balls. “Run!”

“Eggs/Bulba!” They ran as fast as they could, a storm building over head. They did everything they could, Bezai put up a Barrier, the two grass types tried to fight back but there were just too many of them.

Gotta give it to Spearow they were persistent. Even as rain pelted them they continued to give chase. Wild Pokemon fled from the storm and angry cries of Spearow.

Just when it looked like they were gonna make it Bloom slipped in some mud. “Bloom!” Ash dove over the grass and poison type as the Spearow swarm attacked.

“Saur!” Bloom cried.

“Bezai, get Bloom out of here.” He stood up, scratched up and injured. “Spearow...I’m sorry for what happened. It was an accident. Bloom is my Pokemon so I’ll take all the anger you have, but please call off the swarm, end this now!”

The Spearow ignored his words and the swarm launched at the group. “Eggs!” Bezai wasn’t running away, they had only one chance.

“Right! Hypnosis Clever Style!” Yellow waves rippled out among the swarm, the bird monsters began to drop like flies falling fast asleep.

The leader was struggling to stay awake. “You are a tough one, you’re mine Spearow!” Ash threw a monster ball just as Spearow fell asleep.

Jiggle Jiggle Jiggle...Ping!

Ash collapsed. “That was close, we better get out of here before these Spearow wake up.”

“Eggs!”

“Yeah, I’m okay!”

“Bulba!” Bloom jumped on him and licked his cheek.

“I’m glad you are okay too. Lesson learned, no practicing on trees.” He chuckled. The sky cleared up and the group looked up seeing an amazing sight.

A mysterious golden pokemon flew over head, leaving a rainbow in it’s wake. “Whoa!” A pretty feather fell down from the sky, Ash caught it and was amazed at how warm it was.

The monster vanished into the horizon. “Look it’s Viridian City, we made it!” They headed towards the city, they needed to get to a Pokemon Center and fast. The adrenaline was wearing off and the exhaustion and damage were about to hit.

Later a blue haired young man found the sleeping Spearow. “Well if it isn’t my lucky day, heh heh!”

To be continued...Viridian Contest!
