I turned 18 the year one of the biggest local radio stations changed from Easy Listening (it was my bubbe's favorite station) to broadly-defined rock, with an eclectic playlist crossing decades and genres curated by veterans of the '60s underground radio scene. Its news director was an unabashed leftist whose tagline was "if you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own!"
At some point, the station was bought by, IIRC, Clear Channel. I think it changed hands a few times but generally, the playlists got shorter & heavy rotation got heavier, the edges got filed off, and ultimately the station was shut down altogether, consolidated with the network's news channel.
