🎲 GammaOS Next v1.2 rolls out to Anbernic RG CUBE (Android 14!)

GammaOS Next v1.2.0 is now live for the Anbernic RG CUBE, bringing it up to the same Android 14 / LineageOS 21 platform as the RG556, RG476H, RG406H, RG406V and RG Slide, with shaders, full GammaEQ UI and HDMI docking support. 🚀

Hey everyone,

Time to complete the T820 set. The RG CUBE is the last T820 device to receive the GammaOS Next v1.2 upgrade. That means the whole family is now on Android 14 with the same display, audio and quality of life stack, instead of each device living on a slightly different planet. 😄

This build is Patreon-exclusive for now and will head to the public a bit later, following the usual release pattern.

💥 What’s new in v1.2.0 for RG CUBE?

This release brings the CUBE in line with the RG406H / RG406V feature set:

• Android 14 / LineageOS 21 base
  A cleaner, more responsive system stack with better scheduling, modern app compatibility and less background noise. The device feels more like a dedicated handheld and less like a phone ROM.

• Global Shader Pipeline
  System-level screen filters like CRT and scaling shaders, applied at the display pipeline and controlled via a Shader Quick Settings tile.
  Perfect for making that square panel feel like a tiny living room CRT or a clean pixel grid. 📺✨

• Full GammaEQ UI
  GammaEQ is fully wired up with an app so you can:

  • Enable or disable the audio engine

  • Switch between presets

  • Save your own profiles

  • Tweak sound directly in the UI instead of pushing properties
    Great for tuning punchy audio for emulators, Android games or streaming. 🔊

• HDMI Docking Mode
  When connected to HDMI:

  • The internal screen can power down

  • The system resizes to the external display resolution
    Turning the RG CUBE into a tiny dockable console for couch play. 📺🎮

• All the GammaOS handheld quality of life features you expect

  • Daijisho + RetroArch front end (BIOS not included)

  • Universal button remapping so the layout matches your muscle memory

  • Analog stick calibration for range and deadzone tuning

  • DC dimming emulation to help with PWM flicker on long sessions

  • Deep Sleep Mode plus performance governors and a rich set of GammaOS Quick Settings tiles

  • Relaxed storage where supported so front ends and emulators can see your games more easily

  • Magisk root on supported images for people who like to go further with customization

⚖️ Lite vs Full on RG CUBE

Same philosophy as the rest of the T820 line:

• Full

  • Includes Google Play Store, Google Play Services and Google dependent components

  • Best if you rely on Play Store, Google sync and apps that need GMS

• Lite

  • Ships without Google services or Play Store

  • Best if you want a focused handheld that uses sideloading or alternative stores and you do not want Google in the background

Core GammaOS features like shaders, GammaEQ UI, HDMI docking, performance modes and input stack are present in both. The main choice is how “Google-attached” you want your CUBE to be.

🧭 Installation

Install flow is identical to the other T820 devices:

1. Download GammaOS Next v1.2.0 for RG CUBE from the release link above.

2. Extract all .7z.00x parts together using 7 Zip on Windows.

3. Follow the T820 family installation guide (RG556, RG CUBE, RG406H, RG406V, RG476H, RG Slide):

Flashing will wipe user data, so make sure you have backups before you start. 💾
