I'm proud to present Lotus Esprit Turbo - Essex 1980 mod, meticulously crafted to provide you with an authentic driving experience. This iconic British supercar, known for its lightweight fiberglass body, Giugiaro design, and turbocharged 2.2-liter engine, perfectly captures the innovative spirit of early 1980s Lotus.

Recreating the Authentic Driving Experience:
My main aim was to replicate the driving characteristics of the original car as closely as possible, based on detailed analysis of contemporary road tests and reviews. While achieving a perfect replica is challenging, I believe I have managed to deliver dynamic behavior very close to the real vehicle.

The early ’80s Esprit Turbo was praised for its superb handling balance and agility. Period testers described it as “cornering on rails,” with very little body roll and a neutral setup that only gave way to mild, progressive oversteer when provoked. One review also highlighted the “absence of anything that might be called appreciable understeer,” reinforcing how confidence-inspiring the chassis felt. The steering was another standout feature: unassisted, very direct, and rich in feedback. As Autocar put it at the time, the steering was “exquisite,” responding immediately to even the smallest input, making the car feel alive at speed.

The ride quality was firm but surprisingly compliant for a mid-engined supercar. Reviewers noted that bumps “affected each wheel at a time, not the car as a whole, and then only very little,” giving the Esprit a poise that allowed it to handle both mountain roads and high-speed touring with ease. The turbocharged 2.2-liter engine delivered progressive power without the harsh lag common in other early turbo cars. One journalist remarked how the boost came on “smoothly and predictably,” building into a satisfying surge past 4,000 rpm while maintaining tractability in everyday driving.

For this mod, I focused on adjusting the model to reflect these characteristics as closely as possible, while also respecting the technical data provided by the manufacturer in its manuals. I worked with original specs such as camber, toe, and caster values, torque and power curves, weight distribution, transmission differential data, and many other parameters to ensure the dynamic behavior feels as authentic as possible.
