Supercar Showdown: The British Stake Their Claim in Europe’s Elite

When you think of Europe’s supercar battle, it’s easy to picture Italians and Germans duking it out - Ferrari’s prancing horse charging against Porsche’s precision engineering.

But hold the brakes! The British have a bold voice in this high-octane conversation, and they’re not just whispering politely.

With a legacy of lightweight innovation and track-honed agility, Lotus, throughout the 1970s, wasn’t just creating stylish road cars - they were commanding respect on the motorsport stage. With groundbreaking innovations, the legendary Lotus 72 clinched three Formula 1 Constructors' Championships (1970, 1972, 1973). Later, in 1978, the revolutionary Lotus 79 further cemented Britain's motorsport dominance, securing both the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships through Mario Andretti’s masterful driving. This car's ingenious use of ground-effect aerodynamics rewrote the rulebook on racing performance.

Stepping from the track onto the road… enter the Lotus Esprit Turbo, a mid-engine icon launched in 1980 that redefined what a supercar could be. Its razor-sharp Giugiaro design, pop-up headlights, and featherweight fiberglass body paired with a 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pumping out 210 hp. Don’t let the modest power fool you—this beast hit 0–60 mph in as little as 5.5 seconds and danced through corners with Hethel-tested precision. From Bond’s alpine chases in For Your Eyes Only to thrilling drives on B-roads, the Esprit Turbo proved Britain could rival Italy’s flair and Germany’s might with pure driving joy.

Test Drive gave us this alternative choice back in the day. Excited to see it snd I'd love to see one of the newer X180s too.
