I'm not much of a mathematical or analytical thinker when it comes to layout and design. I prefer to feel things out and play with lines or positions until it just 'feels' right. Your audience isn't going to be using rulers to examine the pages, they're going to be experiencing it by eye, so that's how I like to draw it out too ^^
