I use a combination of things! To make the characters grey, I either remove all the materials in the 'surfaces' tab in Daz, or I use something like: www.deviantart.com/spyrorue/art/Genesis-Grey-Materials-G8-Bundle-700269005 Any backdrop you can find will do, but I like to make sure that the BG is either a lighter or darker grey than the model to create contrast between the two. As for the lighting, I have a few sets that I use often, my favorites being by paper tiger: www.daz3d.com/infinity-hdri-lighting It usually goes on sale for a couple of dollars, but I think you could achieve this look without spending any money. I just do it to save myself time every month! There are a lot of free HDRIs online (like HDRI Haven) that could work similarly if you just adjust a few of the settings in the render tab.
