Daily Studies

I already study almost every day, but I decided to try and do faster, more focused studies instead of long poses and master copies that can take me weeks to finish. So here are the first few!

('Egyptian Woman' by John Singer Sargent)
I really want to do a ton of film studies to practice painting scenes and environments, but to be honest they are a little overwhelming for someone like me. All that detail can be distracting, which is why I prefer doing master studies instead. The looser brushwork is easier for me to understand, but I will never be able to understand anything else if I don't keep trying. I just have to accept that the studies are going to be a mess until I figure out what works best.
The main things I want to take away from them are: visual storytelling, composition and cropping, values, color and lighting. The detail isn't important at all to me, but everything else is. If I keep doing them similar to this study below, I should develop a method for doing them in a simpler, faster way.

(From 'Melancholia' Never seen it, but I love the shot. It is very Ophelia, and the colors are so beautiful and muted. I am trying to choose scenes that I would want in my own work and stories!)

2018-08-29 06:09:17 +0000 UTCThank you! I mainly use a chalk brush for everything, including the skin tones. I can't remember where I got it from exactly, I have been using it for so long now, but this one MIGHT be similar?: https://www.deviantart.com/markwinters/art/Chunky-Chalk-Brush-169431540 I also use mixer brushes, but for the Sargent study I only used that one brush! Just anything that is is in between hard and soft-edged.
