I have almost no experience designing outfits (I did some for a commission once???) but I guess now is as good of a time as any to start learning. I tried to get the ideas down as quick as I could, so excuse the mess.
Some of Epoch's original design has survived since the beginning. I had a list of outfit keywords similar to the one above that I made when I first created him. Since he is a doctor and the story is about plagues, it seemed silly not to include the bird mask at least.
There is also several colors that I have always associated with him: white, dark colors like black or deep greens, and accents of rose gold. I liked the strong contrast between them, and the idea of his white clothing always getting dirty. Green is also going to play a large part in this story, because:
1. It's my favorite color
and
2. There is not enough of it in art. Green has long been considered a hue many are afraid to use. I'm not though, so expect a lot more green in my character designs.
Another thing was the asymmetrical cloak with a hood. In my head, Epoch was always pretty casual, and I wanted to find a balance between his preference for comfort and keeping up the appearance of a doctor. I also played around with very androgynous styles, another major theme I plan to keep throughout many characters.
I liked the cinched waist silhouette of a vintage nurse's apron and the inclusion of floral patterns, either as part of the medical symbol, or details on the cloak. I thought it was fitting since plague doctors would stuff their masks full of flowers, herbs and spices to keep the smell of sickness and death out.
The mask, gloves and even the boots can all be pretty interchangeable here, either light or dark depending on the larger parts of the outfit.
I know I don't want the apron part to flare out at the bottom now, because I feel like the cloak already flares enough on its own, so I will probably keep the skirt closer to his body, and have the pants beneath it.
Then last is the high collar. I always imagine Epoch with a longer neck, and I really like how it looks on him here. I will have to be careful with black collars though, since his hair is so long and usually draped over a shoulder.
So now I plan to take the pieces I like about these and throw all of them into one or two main outfit designs, something I want to do for all my characters.
