It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Stops Being Funny to Be Gay Instead

“Mac Finds His Pride” (November 7, 2018)

Twelve seasons in, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stopped giving Mac the Smithers treatment and let him be gay, but it’s the season thirteen finale we’re talking about because it highlights Mac’s sexuality without making jokes, at least for the third act. The episode received wide praise, but did it also jeopardize the show’s comedic tone in order to make a statement?

Thanks to Dr. Alfred Smith, David Russell and Ally J. Shivka for offering their interpretations of the narrative in the dance sequence!

The Riches ran for two seasons. FWIW the youngest child (about 12) of the main character was some form of gender non-conforming, though not a whole lot was done with that plot other than establishing that the family was fine with it.

Jay Bloodworth

I tried to narrate it as best I could. I am truly bad at dance.

Drew Mackie

Intentionally or otherwise, Drew's initial description of the dance sequence completely omits the shift from Mac's triumphant pose and lift to his collapse and accepting of the maternal "It's okay." So few of us have been told that throughout our lives, and hearing a loving presence say those words seems to be a big part of why it brought the tears.
