"What Is Anime?"
Added 2024-04-23 02:03:49 +0000 UTCThis week, you're getting a new (and long-delayed) episode of Cartoons That Made Us Gay, and to get the episodes I had to rip my DVDs of the anime Saint Seiya. The were printed in 2003, and it is a trip to go back to a time when the American market for Japanese animations was so untested that the disc essentially opens with a primer on what anime is. (It's also an advertisement for a now-defunct anime website, but still.) This was too much of a throwback not to share.
Saint Seiya was a popular Japanese series that never quite landed in the United States in a big way. Weirdly, it did in Latin America. But perhaps as a result of the lack of popularity, the original, "classic" series is not streaming anywhere handy. As a result, if you want to watch the episodes we're covering in this week's bonus episode, you will have to do it on our Vimeo. (PW: gay)
The three episodes we're focusing on come early in the series and focus on the character Andromeda Shun, who despite all appearances, is male.

Argh. You are making me feel like an old person. But will look into. Thank you.

2024-04-23 03:48:17 +0000 UTCBoth the Japanese and English dubs are there - you can switch between the audio tracks in the playback settings. Though maybe you can only watch the dub if you have a premium account, I’m not sure.

2024-04-23 03:03:13 +0000 UTCBtw, the original Saint Seiya is readily accessible and legally streaming on Crunchyroll - available both subbed and with the dub produced for Netflix when they had it a few years ago. The edited DiC dub is a real throwback though and I do wish it was easier to find all of (though I much prefer the new dub). https://crunchyroll.com/series/GRJQVJNXY?utm_medium=ios&utm_source=share
