FIXED: The Simpsons Does a Riff on Lesbian Cult Classic

Note: There was an error toward the end of the original post, and because Patreon is not allowing me to swap out the file for the corrected one I had to repost.

“Lisa the Drama Queen” (January 25, 2009)

So here’s an interesting one. In its twentieth season, The Simpson did an episode inspired by Heavenly Creatures, the 1994 Peter Jackson movie that has Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey playing schoolgirls who flee into a fantasy world and also each other. More than a decade later, this story would play out again, only with Lisa Simpson and a new character voiced by Emily Blunt, and that might seem like a strange combo, especially because the Simpson version nixes the sex and violence of the original, but it nonetheless works.

Special thanks to the writer of this episode, Brian Kelley, for sharing his memories of how this episode came to be.

For a limited time, you can still screen Heavenly Creatures via the GEE Patreon, but that window is closing. Info here.

Remember a short-lived sitcom from Fox's early days? Tell us about it (there’s a thread on Patreon that’s open to even non-members), and we may cover it for our upcoming bonus miniseries, The Fox Files!

I'm sure I'll pipe in later with views and recommendations for other NZ movies that don't suck (but yes this is Jackson's best and he's never been this good again) but one thing I feel compelled to say now is that they don't pronounce murder like other kiwis do - they say "moider" like they think the gangsters in the pulp novels they read do

I first saw this when I was WAY too young. In the ballpark of 8-12 years old. Coincidentally, I live in New Zealand and was on vacation with family as my Mum waswatching this on free-to-air TV. I was drawn into the story and started actively watching with them but it's kinda of surprising that between the queer sex scenes and the characters plotting murder, at no point did my Mum think 'maybe my child shouldn't watch this?' As you can imagine, I had a total sobbing breakdown and had to be consoled after the films violent ending. I've seen it again since and the ending still fucks me up; the horrific moaning of the Mother character still haunts me. If I ever see it again (which I might because it's incredible) I'm excusing myself before the final scene.
