GEE Movie Club Watches HEAVENLY CREATURES

Presented for your enjoyment here is a clip from the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures. Despite the fact that it’s directed by Peter Jackson and stars Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey, it’s not streaming anywhere handy. This is a shame, says me, because it’s not only a really good movie but it’s also part of the queer canon that I feel a lot of people younger than me have not had the opportunity to watch.

Well, here’s what we’re doing about it. Because the episode we’re covering on January 31 — The Simpsons S20E9, “Lisa the Drama Queen” — is heavily inspired by this queer-themed film, we wanted to discuss it with you all *and* give all of you a chance to experience it. So we’re reviving GEE Movie Club to make it happen.

I’ve posted the whole of Heavenly Creatures on our Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/904598064?share=copy

I can't technically stop you from sharing it... but please just don't, because I'm approaching this not so much as piracy but as a special bonus for all you nice people who support the show.

You can watch it on your computer or your phone — or if you want to download the Vimeo app onto your smart TV, you can watch it there too. This is a limited time offer, however. While I’m more okay with letting you watch episodes of TV that aren’t streaming anywhere, movies are different and I don’t really see any point in keeping this up beyond the episode we’re doing.

I want this to be an open discussion — in the comments here and in a special channel I’m creating on the GEE Discord — to talk about the film, the people who made it, the real-life events that inspired it and whatever else sparks your fancy. I’ll be featuring some of the discussion in the episode.

I’m super stoked to hear what you all think of this movie — and in particular, Kate and Melanie’s performances, which I think are just awesome.

I'm finally going to watch this while doing a bit of self care 💅 Happy Sunday everyone!

I was getting DVDs in the mail from Netflix up until the very end. This is one of the last ones I ever got (sometime last September). Mail from Netflix was the only way I could find it.
