Backdoor Pilots: The Nanny Tries to Rip Itself Off

“The Chatterbox” (May 15, 1995)

Confoundingly, The Nanny’s one and only backdoor pilot focuses on a single woman who ends up out on her fanny and subsequently takes a job that puts her in a position to become a surrogate mother to the offspring of the man she’s lusting after. Written by Fran Drescher and her husband, the script doesn’t seem to realize that the show being pitched already exists. But at the very least, sitcom vets Edward Hibbert and Lauren Tom make this alternate sitcom universe worth spending time with, however brief.

The theme song to this series was composed and performed by Meika Grimm. The art for the series was designed by Ian O’Phelan.

I enjoyed watching Hearts Afire with my Mom but the only episode I really remember is the one where they tried to humanize Rush Limbaugh. It was so very gross. At one point Markie Post dances with Rush and she admits he’s charming in real life. 14 year old me was not having it.

Out of all of Glen’s business ideas so far, the Fran Drescher Nanny outfits coffee table book is the winner. Make the call, Glen! Also: Drew, check out Da Kink in my Hair. Started as a play and became a sitcom in 2007 here in Canada. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Da_Kink_in_My_Hair_(TV_series)
