Backdoor Pilots: Married… With Children Gives Matt LeBlanc His First Spinoff

“Top of the Heap” (April 7, 1991)

Midway through Married… With Children’s fifth season, viewers got an episode that dispensed with the regular cast (save for Al) and spent most of its time focused on Vinnie and Charlie Verducci, a father-son pair who’d appeared on the show once before and who were getting their own sitcom the following week. Because Top of the Heap was already a done deal, this may not be a true backdoor pilot — no audience was being tested, just advertised to. In fact, Drew guesses that their inaugural appearance on Married was intended as the standalone intro to these new characters, and this one just being Fox’s attempt to get more eyes on the spinoff.

The theme song to this series was composed and performed by Meika Grimm. The art for the series was designed by Ian O’Phelan.

So the Gene Rayburn thing: He hosted Match Game (and Match Game P.M.). You had two contestants and a bank of celebrities (the usual suspects from Hollywood Squares and game shows like that). The questions would be statements with a blank in the statement, the celebrities had to fill in the blanks and the contestants had to match the most celebrities to win the round. A lot of the questions were call and response like, “Lisa so lovely…“ And the audience would break in with, “How lovely is she?“. Or tall/stupid/fat/etc, and then he would finish the sentence with a blank in the statement. So "Pete's dog was so hairy . . ." "How hairy was he?" "Pete's dog was so hairy he had to brush him with a blank." So the "We agree," that you mentioned was just some funny little weirdness.

I don't have a lot of childhood memories, but I remember my dad being PISSED when he realized that this was a backdoor pilot.
