Golden Girls Celebrates Valentine’s Day With Gay Guys, Dick Jokes and Condoms

“Valentine’s Day” (February 11, 1989)

Feb. 14 marks a truly terrible holiday that we’d normally encourage you all to ignore. However, it so happens that just in time for 2023’s Valentine’s Day we were reminded of a Golden Girls episode that spins not one but four tales about this wretched holiday. Believe us: They do it about as good as any TV show ever could.

Watch Matt Baume’s video that inspired this episode, “Why Do Gay Guys Love The Golden Girls?”

Listen to “Glen Writes a Golden Girls,” which is maybe one of the best things we’ve done with this podcast, as well as all the previous Golden Girls episodes.

Ah, I remember watching this with my uncle when I was 10. I don't think I knew what condoms were, but I enjoyed the embarrassment. What stood out for me the most was how everyone said "St. Valentine's Day." I don't think I'd ever heard that before. No one I knew called it that, and maybe no one else on TV that I was watching. I didn't know if it was a different thing or what. Also appreciate the mention about physical media. I still buy CDs, and this is apparently weird to some people.

I loved these fake-clip shows so much. Seeing my favorites do a little sketch comedy? Yes.

Lea Susan Engle

The Office aired a clip show in 2010, which seemed way too late to air clip shows even at the time.

Erin Hardy

Popping in to mention the fake clip show ep of Communuty “Paradigms of Human Memory” s2e21.

Nessie

The most recent clip show I could find was an episode of the Nickelodeon sitcom Henry Danger called “Remember the Crimes” from shortly before it ended. I guess this was a Dan Schneider tradition & he was the last person doing it (I’m assuming he’ll never get another chance to do it, but…)

No need to watch Boat Trip! Two Old Queens did an episode on it https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/two-old-queens/id1469312045?i=1000567360288

Rashomon the film was based on a great classic Japanese short story told from multiple perspectives, the last of which is from that of the ghost of the murdered person - hence the clairvoyant invention for the film. The story titled Rashomon is actually a totally different short story from the same book!

Including a montage of the Dean in different drag costumes, if we’re looking for a GEE angle

Ryan Gaffney

Community season 2 did “Paradigms of Human Memory,” which was a clip show parody where the clips were from events in the characters’ lives that had never been shown to the audience before.

Also watching this made me think of the arc of Dorothy and Sophia's characters as you could do the St. Valentine's Day massacre vignette with Sophia, Dorothy and Stan without changing any dialogue.

Robyn Pavlakovich

The Clerks cartoon did a clip episode for their second episode, which contains a misunderstanding/gay joke that likely wouldn't see the light of day now. Henry at least mentioned it on the what a cartoon for Clerks.
