Weirdest Episode Ever: Frasier Has Weird Dreams (And So Does Everyone Else)

“Freudian Sleep” (February 3, 2004)

You may be noticing that this installment of WEE is not, in fact, about Benson. That’s because upon watching the “murder cruise” Benson, I realized that it sucked, and so your last minute substitution is instead about a series that’s never steered us wrong: Frasier. Specifically it’s the final season episode that features not one or two but six dream sequences, all of which go to tell the viewer something about the emotional state of the character having them. That’s something most dream sequences on sitcoms don’t do, even though that is how dreams work in real life.

And yes, we have previously covered a Frasier dream episode on GEE: “Frasier Has a Gay Dream”

The logo for Weirdest Episode Ever was designed by Ian O’Phelan. The theme music was composed by Nick Loiacano.

There used to be download links to the episodes in the posts, but I'm not seeing them anymore? What's the best way to download the mp3s?

I have never look into whether there is a Frasier cast. Surely there must be one called "We're Listening," no?

Is it just me or is Frasier the best sitcom without a good episodic podcast? I admit, it's been a while since I've checked, but most of them die off early in the series, and the one I know of that completed the series is hosted by people I don't want to spend that much time with.

Oh we covered Newsrado and bring all this up. We just weren't super inclined to cover Newsradio in WEE because the GEE about it did not do well.

Drew Mackie

I know this was mentioned sometime back in another Weirdest Episode comment section, but there are three episodes of NewsRadio that fall into the weirdest episode category: The season three episode "Daydream," where they all imagine they are in horror and sci-fi movies, being chased by Freddy Krueger and the xenomorph from Alien among others (some of the actors also break character as in one scene Joe is “forced“ to take off his shirt and reveal his sexy pecs and he openly laughs after doing so); the season three episode "Space,“ were they are in a radio station in space; and the season four finale “Sinking Ship,“ where they are crew and passengers on the Titanic. These episodes all take place in the office building on their floor, as opposed to being transported to the respective sets. While "Daydream" is obviously full of daydreams, "Space", and "Sinking Ship" are simply there in the News radio continuum, no explanation aside from zany shenanigans. Also Phil Hartman is in all three. To orient yourselves to the characters (if you haven’t already seen the show) you might want to watch an episode or two before these, as everyone stays in character despite the situations. For Gayest Episode purposes, Joe is comically homophobic, and Matthew (as played by Andy dick) is not, I repeat, not gay. Okay? (mhmm, sure, okay)

Yeah but I’m thinking the one with Hester’s research partner comes first

Disappointed we didn't get a murder mystery, but always happy to have another Frasier episode! Will we get The Ski Lodge some day?
