The Goode Family Shows That There Are At Least Two Types of Lesbians

“A Tale of Two Lesbians” (June 19, 2009)

It’s not exactly incorrect that you can summarize The Goode Family as “What if King of the Hill but liberal?” But that description makes it seem like Mike Judge’s follow-up to KotH didn’t have potential. It did, and just a few episodes in, it was world-building in a way few other series did, by giving viewers not just one lesbian couple but two — and they were nothing alike either! Imagine! Multiple representations of female queerness onscreen at the same time! We’re joined by longtime friend of the pod Mir Knight to discuss why this series didn’t succeed.

I mean, obviously this show didn't last, but Maude did a pretty good job of showing how it could work. King of the Hill, for what it's worth, is a show about mostly conservative people that sometimes are rejecting liberal ideals but it wasn't making fun of liberals week to week. I still think this basic premise could work and we'd be better for it

I have a feeling it wouldn’t have lasted more than a whole season anyway. A lot of jokes at liberals are kind of inside jokes. There’s more extremism from conservatives, which makes it easier to joke about them. Like when Stephen Colbert had "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central (right behind The Daily Show) where he played an extreme conservative idiot version of himself. Very entertaining because he'd shown a light on how absurd conservatism can be. Liberals are kind of boring unless they’re all gay, or apologetic allies, or overcompensate for being cis white hetero whatevers, or over help the pet shelter, or are always protesting something or telling everyone they’re vegan (like saying "I’m Shawna" all the time). Maybe there’s actual material there after all, but I think, after a while it would’ve gotten mean.

Huh. I assumed it was about her short, squat shape.

Oh, I watched all of The Goode Family and I remember being sad but not surprised when it was cancelled. A very quick Google shows Hulu has been around since 2007. (I also took the "fire hydrant" nickname to mean that she's a uh squirter.)
