The Cartoons That Made Us Gay: ReBoot

"What's Love Got to Do With It?" (November 18, 2001)

Welcome to the first installment of the new monthly version of The Cartoons That Made Us Gay!

People have been asking us to do Reboot since we starts this, mostly because Old Enzo is way hotter than he has any right to be. But now that we're finally doing it, we're surprised as anyone to report that there's a lot of queer subtext for the female characters on the show too. In fact, in this particular episode, there's more debatable flirting between them then there is fan service of Enzo in a skimpy wrestling outfit. A small heads up to any diehard ReBoot fans out there: we had a rough time dealing with this series dense lore to the point that this episode actually serves as a reminder that hour-longs and heavily serialized shows do not work well with our show concept. But hey, CTMUG is back and at least we won't have to venture back to the ReBoot-verse any time soon.

I loved this show so much growing up! Within the franchise, it also had one of the most frustratingly difficult Playstation One games as well as two motion simulator ride at Luxor in Las Vegas! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPLkDd8FJzo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJSrtV7Winc

I was surprised to see this show covered. I definitely thought it was one of those shows that never aired outside of Canada. When the movies aired, the boys at my middle school immediately had a "hilarious" retitle for My Two Bobs -- I didn't know about the monoboob issue, so perhaps that was an intended joke. Also, I completely forgot about Daemon, which goes to show how little impact this show made on me, and I absolutely watched all of it. In all, it didn't leave much of an impression on the gay part of my heart the way Sailor Moon did, but I did become much more interested once it got all dramatic and serialized, so your observation that the soap opera aspect is very gay (probably the gayest thing about it, for me).

I think this is actually common, hence the surprise at realizing how hard the show would eventually go.

I completely missed this iteration of Reboot. I remember seeing the same four or five episodes of the first season run over and over again until I gave up on the series.

Okay so it is a mixed bag. Just a. Heads up.

ReBoot holds a very weird and precious place in my heart and history. Looking forward to this one guys thanks!

The Reboot intro is just giving me all the Canadian 90's kid feelings!
