The Last GEE Movie Club: Last Bitten

This is your chance to drop any questions, comments, criticisms or recollections about the 1985 vampire comedy Once Bitten. It's one of Glen's favorite movies and it's how we are saying goodbye to GEE Movie Club. Post a comment here and will read it/address it/respond to it in the episode, which we will be recording most likely on Sunday.

And if you'd want to watch in advance of the episode, it's actually posted on YouTube, legally and for free!

This was such a weird movie, and I can’t quite put my finger on why. It was fine and entirely enjoyable, but the pacing? scene choices? vibe? just never coalesced into a good movie.

When you said you were doing this movie my embarrassing ass thought you were talking about Love at First Bite with George Hamilton and Susan Saint James πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I tried to go see this movie when I was 9 because I loved Jim Carry at the time, but it was rated "PG-13," so I asked my mom to write me a note (she did that kind of thing for me), but when I got there, the woman at the kiosk very gently told me she couldn't sell me a ticket, and I was too ashamed to show her the letter, so I didn't see it until years later, and it wasn't even all that racy (again: my mom let me watch anything, and it was the 80s, so a plot line about virgins was absolutely no big deal to me by the time I was 12). That's my Once Bitten story.

I *adored* this movie as a child, particularly for all the cheeky sexcapades. Jim Carey was so damn cute. I did get in trouble in second or third grade because of this film, though ... On a walk to school one morning, I decided to educate the rest of my friends. Learning is fun! So, after watching Once Bitten for the millionth time, I asked, "Do you guys know what a 'virgin' is?" Pre-pubescent me went on to explain in some (surely fabricated) detail to my wide-eyed peer group. My mother was waiting for me when I got home, red-faced and yelling. Apparently word spread fast and she'd already gotten two phone calls from two separate parents, informing on my morning. It was that day I (started to) learn that, due to my loose upbringing and precocious nature, I knew a few things that weren't necessarily age-appropriate and it was better to keep my knowledge to myself. You're never too early to learn to repress!
